MOA, MRAD and regular old inches?

Hi,

Doing some reading in an old book about some target shooting and accuracy.

Inch's and MOA I'm familiar with. What's the deal with MRAD though

Same s**t, different name? Or something else?

Not sure if it's just fancy marksman talk or whether or not I should learn it

Just another unit of measurement...

From memory MRAD is metric instead of Imperial, and I think 1 MOA = 3.5 MRAD?

Don't know of anyone who actively uses it though? Still with inch's and MOA and you'll be talking the same language as everyone else.

Neither MRAD/milradian or MOA/minute of angle are metric or imperial. They are angular units of measure. A radian is the angle created when the radii of an arc are equal to the section of the circle's circumference created by said radii. A milradian is one thousandth of a radian.

Only reason to use MRAD is for ranging with a scope with Mil-Dots

1 MOA is actually 1.047" @ 100 yards. So at 300 yards 1 MOA is 3.141" so if ranging with a MOA reticle and you are just rounding of yo inches at longer ranges your error will increase.

If I'm 0.14" off at 300m that's good enough for me

I see your point Crys but the error is there and more pronounced at extended ranges especially if using the turrets to dial for elevation and the ballistics of your round. To most of us we live with it but to the extended range shooters this error will cause issues.

Wheelbarrow what ever scope you get make sure it has matching turrets & reticle. I have seen mismatched turrets and reticles on a few scopes.
