Third Time Lucky - Sambar Hunting Success

Post by MG5150 » 23 Feb 2026, 4:45 pm

G’day all,

Mid-January I went into a new state forest block for a bit of an exploration mission. I saw six sambar right on last light and couldn't wait to get back.

It was another three weeks before I could get out again, but next time I was there I got into a proper honk-off with a hind. I was having a back and forth with the whistle but she didn't reveal herself and I lost her to the dying light again. Close again, but no cigar.

I headed back over the recent weekend and it finally came together —This time I was able to get it done.

I filmed the whole thing and put it together if anyone’s interested in seeing how it played out:

Why not after all there are only two Safe Places for a bolt one is in the rifle the others on the bench when you are cleaning that rifle to have it anywhere else is just courting disaster lost count at the amount of times even on this forum people have asked why they're bolt won't extract the 223 cartridge first question I always ask do your own 308 or 243 or a 22 250

I've not read what the regs stipulate in Vic or NSW about bolts ,, however I do know that in Qld it clearly states that the bolt must be removed from the firearm when stored in the safe.
And further says that it is ok to be stored in the safe with the firearm, but definitely not "in" the firearm.
I would have presumed the same/similar regulation would've applied in the other states.

And also buried deep in fine print (in Qld) legislation,,, the bolt itself is classified as a "firearm" and therefore not allowed to be stored in the ammunition compartment of the safe alongside ammunition.

In Vic its legal to leave the bolt in the firearm. We can also leave magazines out of the safe as they are not classed as a firearm part. "Technically" you can buy them without a firearms license. I've bought many online from stores and only states other than Vic have asked to email a copy of my license before they send it

We don't have to take the bolt out for storage in Vic... I did do it as an extra precaution but after multiple occaisiosn where I was about to drive off but had to run back inside to get the bolt I decided to just leave it in.

Lever , Falling block and rolling block rifles have the "bolt " in the action all the time so why not bolt actions. Same difference.

devils in the detail . a lot of people lose their license for improper storage , unsecured laws . i have a spika 10 gun safe , with the same brand of pistol safe securely bolted to the top of that . ammo/powder up top , bolts in the smaller middle section , rifles down the bottom . i also secure my bolts in separate locked containers when i travel . licensing will use any excuse these days, and incorrect storage is used a lot . cheers

I use those zip lock sandwich bags to put my bolts in. Each one labelled in texta. Then they all lay together in one box. Lessons the chance of inserting wrong bolts, and at the same time keeps em clean.
