Magpie breeding success rates ?

Post by Die Judicii » 27 Feb 2026, 9:43 am

Does anyone know if the following is normal or exceptional ? I know that most wildlife will breed twice in the one season if it is a GOOD season but,,,,,, We have a resident female that tends to live in our backyard and is quite friendly. We don’t feed her, although she does help herself to anything left ovet by our dog. I noticed this morning that she has got a new chick/juvenile. She’s already had two this season and this new one is her third. I’ve never noticed more than two in the one season before wherever i’ve lived.
I do not fear death itself... Only its inopportune timing!
And,,,,It's been proven,,,,, the most trustworthy females in my entire life were all canines.

i've been hand feeding my local maggies for 20 years , they've got a lot of trust in me and their antics are amusing . 2 lots of chicks per year are the norm from my observations . i've made it a rule that i don't get too familiar with the chicks as it makes it harder when the parents push them to leave . i had one chick that used to come inside my house at every opportunity , and was trusting to the point i reckon i could've got it to sit on my arm . but outside the parents were attacking it pretty badly to make it leave . so while i love having them around i set boundaries with the chicks . i'm nowhere near wapiti with his frogmouth , but i like my maggies . lawns looking good too as they clean up the grubs and pests . :D

Fellas I have quite a few magpies here, bringing all their chick's in too. Sometimes there's a bit of a blue over territory, but I never took note of how many sets of chick's they rear through the seasons. It's good having them hunting around through the vege patch pulling off any insects that are after a free feed.

i'm not surprised you've got "pet" magpies too , Dr doolittle :)
my resident magpie family , the female makes a soft squawk very similar to the chicks "feed me" squawks when she wants a feed . i've never heard another adult magpie make a sound like it . maybe i fed her as a chick and it's some unique learned behaviour ? maybe .... :unknown:

The resident pair of magpies this year managed to raise 5 chicks (two batches at least) at least 4 of which are still hanging around. Their antics are very amusing - especially how the siblings interact with each other. The adult female is the most aggressive of the lot, the adult male is quite chill.
Last two seasons have been pretty slim for the magpies as we have lots of channel billed cuckoos arrive mid spring and hang around till mid summer wreaking havoc.
I suspect that apart from eating eggs they also kill juvenile magpies and currawongs. Juvenile magpies would disappear overnight.
It's weird watching a currawong feed a much larger juvenile cuckoo.

A big family has been around all summer or longer and people must be feeding them.
On 2 occasions the tamest smart ass one has walked into my laundry from the back yard and walked through the garage and out the front.

The birds have personalities, as a cheeky big male yellow robin befriended me and fed on wood borer type things that look like cockroaches when I was splitting wood. I was stomping on them and he ate about 5 one arvo.
Non of his family were as friendly as him, landing beside me and on my axe handle.

yellow robin, i had to google that, pretty little bird . my magpies have distinct personalities , some of the young have no fear and take to being hand fed very quickly . the minah birds have been getting in on the action recently too . isn't nature great :D
