Post by MeccaOz » 04 Oct 2014, 7:45 pm

I have a non firearm related project Im working on and would like to buy some 000 Buck sized pellets. Can y'all tell me if I need a license to buy just the pellets themselves, as I dont have a Shotgun on my license ?

Can't help with your local laws but in nsw pellets or shot are like bullets, cases etc and no licence is required. Also here shotguns are cat A same as rimfire rifles and as long as you have that category on your licence you can buy ammo, powder or primers for it.

Sorry I can't be of more help

If you're not fussed about uniform size then call a few dive shops as many used to sell the lead shot filled weight belts. I haven't dived for several years so I'm not sure if you can still buy them but it's another source to try and they won't ask for any license.

30. Ammunition sales
(1) The holder of a Dealer’s Licence may dispose of ammunition to any person who represents himself as being the holder of a licence or permit under this Act entitling him to possess a firearm and ammunition or as lawfully possessing a firearm under the provisions of section 8, and who the dealer believes on reasonable grounds to be entitled to possess a firearm suitable for use with that ammunition, or as being the holder of an Ammunition Collector’s Licence.

Definition of 'ammunition' varies around this nation....;

ammunition includes anything manufactured specifically as a component of ammunition designed for discharge from a firearm and also includes any primer or propellant manufactured specifically for use in making ammunition designed for
discharge from a firearm but does not include ammunition rendered inoperative for the purpose of a collector’s item;

So shot according to the above is ammunition in WA ( :lol: ) whether dealers stick to this technicality, probably do.
If you have a cat A/B you should be good....you shouldnt need a firearm registered, just your Lic.

oh and using shot for anything but shooting is a waste.... I note a recent hospital construction in Melbourne included an area requiring shielding; so the cavity in the walls incorporated lead shielding, in the form of many tons of lead shot, If I recall it was number 4...many tons... what a waste!

How good does shielding work when there is tonnes of gaps of air between the shot :?

I'm guessing ity would be for X-rays.. and if you have have enough shot backed up to the front the rays cant travel in a straight line, my theory anyway ?

Its not shielding gas, so it doesnt need to be airtight,

Its disrupting particles or radiation, that generally travel in a straight line. I believe the shielding is for nuclear and/or other therapies....

I could imaging in decades time when this facility is decommissioned, so bright shooter might salvage the irradiated shot :?

Might make sense, still bit off putting if you were the guy working there and relying on the shielding.

I'd want a solid sheet I reckon :?

I did have a bit of a look around mate, and the amount I need it's just to costly to use ball bearing, and 000 Buck is the perfect size + Ive tested it out. But Thankyou for the heads up mate :D

Depending on how much you need Mecca, had a look into making your own?

Would make it about 1/5th the price if you need a worthwhile amount.

I think you'll need a shot making contraption as opposed to a mold... like a micro version of a shot tower that melts the leads and drops it into water through openings according to the shot size.....

edit to add;
scrap that idea, just reread the title, 000 is 30 to 40 cal from memory, mold away, else you'll probably need a 100 foot tower....

You could always build a full size tower if you really want to pass the time :lol:

Or just break into Daimaru, or whatever the name is nowadays in the City and fire up the old shot tower there... run off a batch of shot;

Grab a shovel, dig a pit instead of building a tower.

Cheap ;)
