Interstate Recognition Of Firearms Licenses

Questions about New South Wales gun and ammunition laws. NSW Firearms Act 1996.

Interstate Recognition Of Firearms Licenses

Post by 9.3x64 » 31 Mar 2026, 2:42 pm

I have had long term access to a property in NSW that I hunt during the rut every year. I am a Queensland resident and under current law I am liscenced to use my R8 straight pull bolt action rifle under a category B licence. I have been using Blaser R93/R8 bolt action rifles in NSW on this property for decades.
Now, with all the recent changes in NSW, can I continue to do so?

Does reciprocating recognition of licenses still exist?

No, you can not use a gun that is illegal in NSW inside NSW.

Your QLD licence allows you to shoot in NSW under NSW law.

You will have to use another rifle if you want to shoot in NSW.

Straight pull firearms iare not illegal firearms.
It is a firearm that was cat B, but now moved to cat C in NSW.
So it can be only obtained by mainly primary producers in NSW, but legal in QLD as cat B.

Before Bondi, if you were licensed for a particular rifle in your home state, it was recognised in other states. I am legally licensed for category B firearms in my home state of Queensland, which includes Blaser R8 bolt action rifles. But I wonder if under the new NSW laws something has changed.

Whatever the NSW law is you have to follow that law whilst in NSW. NSW does not care about QLD law as it does not apply in NSW.

So if it is now a cat C then you must be licensed for a cat C. You were allowed to shoot your R8 in NSW because they were cat B and you had a cat B licence. Now they are not cat B.

You see this smith m&p15-22?

I live in QLD but I bought this from VIC. In VIC this is a cat D but in QLD its a cat C.

As soon as I enter VIC this gun becomes a cat D and I must follow VIC law and have a cat D licence to be in possession of it irregardless if it is a QLD cat C.

I see, I never realised that.
Thankyou for explaining it Alex.

All good. Thats why they do the reciprocity because they recognise a QLD A/B licence as the same as a NSW A/B licence etc.

Like remember how folding stocks are cat D in NSW.

Any rifle that enters NSW must be pinned or it becomes a cat D and you must have the correct licence to possess.

Yes, I do remember the folding stock changes in NSW.
I am glad I asked the question.
I will just have to take another rifle when hunting in NSW.

Yeah man it sucks but is what it is.

So just take a traditional throw bolt action that does not have a folding stock.

It would be funny to tell the local NSW magistrate that you were following QLD law. He would not be amused I'm sure.
