Rifle safe moisture - dehumidifiers

Post by Cape_Yorkee » 10 Jul 2026, 5:40 pm

So today I dropped my Hornady dehumidifier on the ground - not cool when 4739264829 silica balls roll around inside the house.

Seeking another replacement. The Hornady was OK, but as I'm in the Tropics it would go from blue to pink in a matter of days and would need 4hrs in the oven to recharge. Especially poor in the wet season - would almost turn pink over 24hrs. I have a tray of rice in the bottom of the safe which I occasionally move around to have fresh dry rice ontop. Keen to hear what others use.

Cheers
All one needs is a 270-Win. That's all!

Crystal dehumidifiers are a waste of time in high humidity areas. Do it properly, drill a small hole in your safe and run a power cord into the bottom of your safe. Then get an electric dehumidifier from that bloke up in Townsville (I will try and get his name). Plug it in and say goodbye by to mould ,and rust forever. I put one in 20 years ago and have never had any rust or mould on anything. So has my brother who also lives on the coast.
I did some testing from time to time, putting cheap things outside the safe, then inside the safe. The difference was amazing.

It absolutely does my head in, the amount of money we all spend on or guns and optics, but most will not invest in a proper dehumidifier.

This is it.
$135 . I have never had to replace a rod or do any maintenance in 20 years.
They were in Townsville but are now at Woody Point.
I got the 61cm length.

Same as you. I found the rice was very good actually, made a big difference.
