Saw the Eye Specialist

Post by Wm.Traynor » 30 Jul 2026, 7:25 pm

Finally, my medical insurance is now more than a year old and I can get my cataracts removed and replaced with lenses. Thinking of having long range for one eye. The other eye will have a lens for foresight distance.

I have no idea how you will get along with THAT particular setup,,,,,,,,, IF your eye specialist would even consider it.
You would be permanently unbalanced in your vision.

Might be a good idea (if you have reading glasses and long distance driving glasses,, to get your optomotrist to put just one lens of each in a frame and try that out before you go doing something crazy with your eyes themselves.

i wear bifocal glasses and get along fine with scope use , with the scope adjusted to suit my glasses . i think if i was going to compete in a comp with opens a lot i'd get a set of specific glasses made . you can change glasses in a instant , lenses not so much . when i'm out in the paddock i can spot game at distance , and use my scoped rifle in a instant without missing a beat . i knew a fella years ago who thought glasses got in his way when using a scoped rifle , said i was silly for wearing glasses . when out hunting i'd be spotting pigs , he'd be saying "where, where ?" :D . all our eyes are different and we just have to work out what's appropriate for our individual circumstance

DJ, have YOU had cataracts removed, and replaced with artificial lenses?

My optician, who is a pistol shooter, recommended different lenses for each eye.
My master eye - RHS. RH shooter. RH lens optimised for pistol shooting.
The ophthalmologist who performed my surgery concurred.

I get along with my (restored) vision just fine.

Gee, I absolutely agree with DJ on that.
Why do something permanent to your vision - a source of necessity and life pleasure for ALL activities, and balance it to using gun sights?

Why not have the best vision medically grafted into your precious eyes for all-round everyday use, to enjoy all aspects of life all the time, then just use a corrective pair of glasses when you go to the shooting range?

Lop-sided vision is a real BASTARD...
I have to wear glasses now for both distance and for close up tech work, so have this inbuilt into my glasses lenses. You can't do that with lens implants, you are stuck with it unless going under the knife again after exhausting your insurance.
This is the same thing really, as you are proposing -
So I tried contact lenses that have one eye for distance, one for close, using your master eye and playing around with both, to optimise shooting in the field, and reading with one eye, distance with the other.
What a brain-twisting monstrosity of a plan, in my experience.
I tried this for a few weeks, and it absolutely took so much pleasure out of using my eyes at all distances I dropped the idea.
I can't imagine how distraught I would have been if this was medically inserted permanantly...

I also can't understand how an ophthalmologist specialist would actually agree to doing that ... you must be one stubborn bugger, respectfully. Either that or the eye doc doesn't care.
I say, make both eyes balanced again and save your brain, and put on corrective glasses for the short time you are shooting.

Interesting discussion. I recently had both eyes done with long vision. Both my optometrist and ophthalmologist suggested one long and one short. Reckon the brain works it out pretty quick. I have spoken with a few people who went that way and they are happy with the outcome. I regret not doing it as I now still need glasses for close up. But at least the cheap 2x magnifying glasses do the job. Not having to spend money on prescription glasses.

I have recently had new lenses in both eyes. They are a different lens in each eye. It has completely changed my life. I don’t need glasses for reading or distance anymore. And for the first time in years I can shoot again with open sights.
I should have done it years ago.
But, the biggest piece of advice I can give is just be completely sure the lens you are having fitted are made by a reputable company. The first set I was offered were made in Asia somewhere, exact location could not be completely confirmed, no thanks.
I ended up choosing lenses made in the Netherlands by a highly regarded manufacturer. Zeiss also make excellent lenses for eyes.
Ask your surgeon what options you have before committing.

Yes Mate, I have had BOTH eyes done.
Prior to having the 1st one done I could not even see a reticle in the scope.
Now,,,,,, I've had both done for quite some time, and am still very proficient when shooting either scopes or open sights.

I think some people may not fully understand the following which leads to misconceptions in what is being discussed here.

a) When getting both eyes done, it is extremely rare to have the same type lens applied to both eyes, to regain normal vision.
It is the nature of the beast for differing lens to be used/prescribed from one eye to the other.
No different to a pair of glasses,, most often the lens are slightly different from one another.
If you doubt what I say, ask any eye specialist that works in the cataract field.

b) So, requesting to have differing ie: one long distance and one close distance lens inserted in your eyes is a totally different
scenario, and not to be confused with a) above.

Yes,, the human brain can adjust to certain changes in vision eg: the physical loss of an eye where perspective changes in the vision can and does happen.
But why on earth would anyone request to have such a drastic change implemented (permanently) when just simply getting the cataracts treated by surgery which uses the appropriate lens used as per the test which is done prior,,, to determine the exact lenses that are needed.

Unless the choice of lenses and or the operation itself is botched in the first place, the end result is amazing.
Just ask people who have already been there and had theirs fixed.

Cataract surgery has for a long time now been extemely successfull,,,,,,,, with just as low problems/side effects.
It is a very simple operation.

I speak with some authority here,, as apart from having previous medical and surgical training myself, I have had many and extensive procedures performed on both of my eyes.
Some of which were completely experimental at the time,,, and which were very successful.
But, without those procedures being done with me as a "guinea pig" I would have been totally blind over thirty years ago.
