New clean

Post by ozpompey » 03 Oct 2026, 5:52 pm

Just purchased a new 22 magnum lever action, wanted to clean any factory residue in the barrel, but my boresnake just doesn't want to come through the action, I am a bit nervous of pulling to hard and it snapping somewhere in the barrel... Any thoughts or ideas ????....

Make a pull-through with some string, use a soaked patch, just ensure you pull straight out as you do with your bore snake. Alternatively buy or borrow an appropriate size rod and jag.

I have a 22 rod, but can't run them through from the breech on a lever action...

Don't sweat it mate.
Go buy a good rod that's got a brass guide with it that you stick in the end of the barrel after the brush/jag goes in (from the muzzle), and keeps it centred.
So it doesn't rub on the rifling at the crown.
A brush on a rod, and a cotton patch on a spear jag after, will clean your bore WAY better than those hideous snakes.

If you keep using that bore snake, and it does what May-in-Chyna stuff always does down the track, degrades suddenly, catches you out and snaps in the bore halfway down, and you will regret it.

If you ever get the chance, buy a good carbon-fibre cleaning rod. These things never (cannot) bend like steel rods, and if they do touch the steel of your barrel, just glide over it without wear. Well worth it, buy once cry once.

Opinions are like arseholes though, right? IMHO

That's why my lever guns are all MARLINs.
Drop the lever out, withdraw the bolt, and push the cleaning rod straight through.

How hard is the bolt to remove?
Yours may be a pain in the rear.

My Rossi is one bolt on the lever pivot.
Lever comes out, and the bolt is easy to slide out.
Just watch the little 2 piece spring guide on the opposing side that the bolts slides over.

Clean as normal.

Taking down the 336-type action is great, but we need a way for a quick clean after shooting.
The .22 actions are so small that I just use homemade fishing line pull-throughs.

A great buy that works well on bigger actions like the 30-30 and straight pulls is a strong, woven, round, cord-like pull-through with brass inserts on both ends, threaded to take short brushes and pull through jags.
They all go in through from the muzzle, even the bronze brush.

Nozzle from silastic tubes can also work if you want to cut costs.

A very good pull-through can be made with fishing trace wire.

Never thought of that, hey that's a great idea Fussy.

Pulling apart a Winchester rifle is not fun, just to clean the bore.
Main thing about 22mag and 17HMR is the bore hasn't got that coating from wax bullets like most LR ammo.
Cleaning from the muzzle is not a drama at all, most of you would not even remember or be around when all the guns you can't own now demanded that, and more!
Semi autos, pump action rifles of old.

I actually reckon that cleaning from the muzzle on rifles where this is a requirement takes less time than pulling a rifle apart and putting it back together again afterwards. And the stress of losing a pin or spring.
Even down to buying a few pipe brushes to use as chamber brushes, putting a 90' bend in one to clean and oil a chamber too. Don't forget that one.
They have long twisted-wire handles long enough to do a great job.

In a rimfire, with the chamber the diameter of the bore, the standard patch will mop the chamber walls, but with bottleneck cases, doing this properly needs an extra step.
I remember a mate who had a beautiful Garand 30-06, he didn't do that once and the chamber rusted... it was ruined forever just from stuffing that task up.
