I would leave any suggested cures till the store or the manufacturers get to inspect it.
Otherwise they would have grounds for refusing warranty by blaming the "cures"

It's a shocker, and I have never seen anything like it.

I would be back to the shop, and if they start spinning, tell them to just send it to the Aussie distributor, and send one back that is normal.

I often wonder if the rust-prone Tikka staino and, by the sound of it Howas is because of how they store hundreds of barrels in not ideal conditions, or whether it is just the grade of staino that is better for barrel machining, but not very rust-resistant.

may not be your cleaning process
,I'm going to go out on a limb here and ask what ammo have you been putting through it? whoops ,missed it ,PPU maybe some corrosive powder or primers, that will destroy a barrel real quick if not properly cleaned ,I mean really quick ,I got given some old unknown 308 stuff years ago and didn't occur to me that it was and within in a week I was patching out the same gunk as you posted

You might have just solved the mystery. Sounds very plausible to me

The ammo was looked at as a possible cause.
It is PPU 55gn Soft points. They are the only ammo used.
I would have expected the bore cleaner would remove any contaminants from the ammo.

Yeah, I just can't do it.
Worked with steel all my life and just can't put water in my guns.

To rule out the cheap ammo, a full clean, maybe bore paste after, then a spirit to remove the paste 100% .
A newish rifle won't be harmed by a bit of bore paste, rust pitting sure will.
Tell the shops nothing, as they will just blame you.
Give it to them as is or just with a couple of #9 patches and inox so they have no spin to throw as quickly as a politician.
Shoot a pack of decent ammo like ADI.
Results will be known within 2 weeks

You should try this clean your rifles especially something that's got a bit of use on it to the point where you think it's squeaky clean then get your Milo tin full of boiling water stick the muzzle of the rifle in that have a tight fitting patch you know the one you roll on the jag like a cigarette push it all the way down in the bottom you will know it proper fit when all air bubbles come out of the muzzle and then use it like a syringe suck it all the way up to the chamber all the way down about 10 times no water goes anywhere but in the bore and watch all the crud coming out that you thought you cleaned out it's an eye opener

that's a stroke of bloody genius . a giant 223 calibre syringe

nah, sounds like a great idea to address the problem without getting water everywhere

Yeah, that is a method I could even try.

I mix casties and jacketed projectiles a little bit in my 30-30, and the boiling water could help clean that out a bit better.

i'm OCD and appreciate the way you can pull a marlin appart very easily for cleaning , but sometimes the screws come loose and they fall apart by themselves :P

model 94's carry and point better than a marlin though , but i won't own another winnie as not being able to clean them from the chamber end of the barrel just annoys me ;)

I taught my mate this around 30 years ago as he has a lot of mill serps and the ammo was nearly just as old he actually went one further after a couple of months does it in his shed with a Primus stove leaves the paint tin on the gas and does this while water is actually boiling says it gets even more out and he gets fantastic life out of his old barrels it is the only way to get all the corrosive salts from corrosive primers oils and solvents dont neutralize the corroding process I took it for granted that everybody still knew this but I suppose as time goes by a lot of things get forgotten because they're just not talked about anymore

Hey dirtjay,
To maybe put this to bed, The suggestion of ammo/corrosive primers being the root cause of your problem,,,,,,,,

Have you used the PPU ammo in any of your other rifles ???

Yeah, the screws all need locktite, apart from the one to remove the lever.

I have never used a 94, they must be good, as I thought the Rossi was great to point and carry.

No good if you can't easily strip a gun though.

The steal back guns, a CZ515, and 20" Dicko shotty can both be stripped easily enough.
My PCP sluggy pull throughs often won't feed through the 22 mag barrel when it's dirty so the barrel comes off.

It would pay to pull a few of the PPU rounds, although I have never read about .223 having that cases corroding away from the inside out issue.

It only happened in the odd batch and cal.
After a blokes very well-used 9.3 Tikka blew up, other blokes pulled PPU rounds and found the white corrosion on the inside.
Nothing visable on the outside until a round gets so thin, it blows apart.

Most would have bought a big batch and been shooting it for years.
The corrosion would have continued over time.
There is a proper name for it.

You can see all the photos on the huge thread on the big hunting.net forum. (My 9.3) or something by Mozzie, from memory.

The easiest firearm I've ever come across to strip down was the Gevarm A2's - through to and including the A7's

All you needed was a coin. eg: 20cents
And anyone could do it blindfolded.
