Shooting without a licence

Hello everyone,

I'm not a shooter yet but it's something I want to get into. I've tried calling my local shooting range a few times but getting them to answer the phone is more difficult than it sounds.

I was told by someone they had range rifles for visitors but I didn't think to ask if I need a licence to shoot them?

Can I go shooting without a licence at a range if they provide the rifles? I'd just like to give it a go first and make sure it's for me before I go to the effort of getting my shooting licence.

FA1996, schedule 3, part 5;

NON-PROHIBITED PERSONS WHO ARE EXEMPT FROM REQUIREMENT TO HOLD A LICENCE UNDER PART 2

Any person who is of or over the age of 18 years who is receiving instruction in the use of a category A or category B firearm by or under the immediate supervision of the holder of a category A or category B longarm licence.

When carrying or using a longarm of the category specified in the supervisor's licence for the purposes of receiving the instruction at an approved shooting range.



Same applies for Handguns, but for a total of no more than 10 sessions in you lifetime....

Pretty sure at my local range you can fill out a form if you are over 18 which allows you to shoot unlicensed whilst there. Then you just hire a .22 (that's all they will let you hire while unlicensed) buy some ammo from them and away you go. You might have to keep calling your local range to find out what their deal is, or better yet just drop in one day and find out.

If you post up what your local range is someone on here might also be able to tell you.

If you've no licence a licensed mate can take you.

If you rent a range gun their will be a range officer supervising the unlicenced shooters.

Back again after my first shoot at the Springvale SSAA range.

Had a great time with just the .22.

My test is booked and am heading to Little River this weekend for some centrefire shooting. It's all coming together

A .22 can be plenty of fun, you don't need a canon to enjoy shooting.

Keeps the costs down too
