Regular locksmith open and rekey a gun safe?

Post by subatom » 19 Nov 2014, 12:19 pm

I've been given an old safe with digital keypad that had gone flat and old mate couldn't remember the code. He hadn't needed the key for years and when he went looking for it couldn't find it to start.

We were at the point of needing to call someone when he found the key, it had worked it's way under skirting board where it was hidden.

Crisis averted this time. Question is though if the keypad died or got broken and you didn't have the key... I guess the lock is a regular lock that a normal locksmith could re-key for you? I hope you wouldn't have to send it back to manufacturer or some huge pain in the ass like that.

Not sure what I'd do if my keypad failed as my safe doesn't even have a key lock. The batteries can be changed externally.

My Brother in law is a locksmith, so I guess I'd be bugging him to fix it. :D

Really? Never seen one without a key override.

That seems sort of... really stupid

Maybe you're expected to buy a new keypad off them with a new pin if it dies.

If you are that would be a massive vulnerability.

An external keypad should be just a keypad, not store the pin. This should be done on an internal device. Otherwise crims could just bring their own keypad which they have the pin to and replace yours and let themselves into the safe.

This is the case for every major brand. I'd be surprised if any maker has done something this stupid.

I reckon they would. My local locksmith has tonnes of safes in his front window so he obviously knows something about them.

I'll have a sticky beak in my local guys window next time I drive past and see what he does.

Most locksmiths can pick the lock on a safe its a fairly simple pick.

Is it a tubular lock?

If so a pick tool like this will do the job.

Umm, I don't know what the kinds of locks are called.

It's a long key with up and down pins, like a old padlock key you see.

Know what I mean?
