Hi I am looking at a Moisin Nagant M44 and was wondering what the availability of ammo is like for it.

No, it's not exactly a .303 British.

.303 Brit is sometimes referred to in metric as 7.7×56mmR. That's R for rimmed.

7.62x56R is R for Russian. As usual non-standard naming conventions confuse things.

The are mistakenly referred to as the same thing often. The 7.62x56R (for Russian) is extremely similar but is technically it's a unique cartridge. It runs 100-200fps faster than the .303 British I think?

Or people assume someone has made and error and meant to type 7.62x54R, but this is different again.

(I hope I have all that right).

Moving forward though, hand loading would be your only option. Projectiles would be fine, dies you'd only have to track down once to do your brass.

The yanks have tonnes of them, so ammo should be available pretty sure highland do it, it's generally not s**t hot ammo but it has good solid brass to reload

Or are you talking about the Finnish re-barreled rifles in their cartridges the 7.62x53r

Or are you talking about .303brit in something other than a Mosin Nagant - there is a Russian 1895 in .303 Brit (fairly rare)

aka 7.92 Russian (hence the confusion)
as opposed to the AK47 round 7.62x39 aka 7.62 Soviet

303Brit totally different round, only thing it has to do with the 'Russian' is the projectile size... the 7.62x53r is the same as the 54r except it uses a 30 cal projectile...

I like the M44 my son likes it to witch is why he took mine over Winchester makes rounds for it here

You can buy factory pretty cheap or reload.

Lawrance Ordnance which newstead mentioned sells for $68 per 100.

That's NSW so not your local but someone there will do similar no doubt.

R stands for Rimmed. It's a rimmed cartridge that is asociated with Rimlock if you don't load the internal mag or stripper clip properly.

You can buy 7.62x54R ammo from your Local, normally Highland and the cases are worth keeping if you reload.
Finding 54R brass by itself is hard to come by, so best method is to buy factory ammo, shoot and keep the brass. Don't bother buying Lapua brass, way over priced compared to factory brass (cost per round).

Depending on the manufacturer, your bore size may differ, so you need to slug the barrel (lead sinker forced down the barrel) and get a measurement of the bore. You will then know what diameter projectiles to buy. The range will be between .310 to .316. Keep projectile to within 2 thou of bore size.

91/30's love long bullets (180 to 200gr), the M44's I'm not too sure (might be buying my first one soon).
