Making Stuff part 2 revisited

A year ago I made myself a new reloading press and have been pretty happy with its performance (look up "Making Stuff part 2" in this section).

So far it's loaded way over 1000 X.32-20 shells and 400 plus .40-65 shells as well as swaging some cast bullets for the .32-20 (but don't bother any more. I let the barrel do that now).

Have only thought of one "improvement" being slotted pads on the front of the ram tube to fit wear adjusting screws - not that I've noticed any wear.

Was the project worth the work? Hmm.....Hell yes!

Just for kicks, do you know what it cost you in materials?

Running the furnace and the rest?

Materials cost under $20 for the ram shaft and assorted screws and about $14 for half a 9 kg bottle of gas.

Think I'll live with it for now but who knows when the urge to "Make stuff" and fiddle with things that aint broke will hit again. We "artists" are not in control of such things LOL.

I can live with spending a little cash, I'd just love to have the tools and know-how to make the stuff myself.

Mostly all you need is the will to have a go. Who cares if if the first or second or third is a dud - you'll have simply learned how not to do stuff and each will be an improvement on the last.

If your situation allows you could always do a fitting and turning or machining course at Tafe.

Just to learn even if it's not for a career.

I think I started out pulling apart my parents appliances as a kid.

Anything with a motor in it got stripped and turned into some contraption.

Made them real happy if I recall correctly

And back then appliances were hard won and definately not disposable.

Meccano was too slow for me as a kid so I went the Lego approach to satisfy the urge to build something. For the past several years I've been getting Lego Technic for Birthdays and Christmas presents. My son loves Lego Star Wars so he gets that and I get Technic, between us we have a massive collection. I love the stuff and already bought myself the Lego Volvo Wheel loader for Christmas and can't wait to start building it There's something about seeing the fruits of one's labour that satifies the primal urge to create. Even at 46 I still like to play with my Lego and it's a great way to spend time with my boy as it won't be long till he's all grown up and won't want to play with his dad.

That said I have a lathe & mill in the garage and currently I'm making some custom O.A.L gauges for the big guns which is little more mature then Lego.



I still have my original Lego from >40 years ago, that was one toy I never gave away....
