Are you sure you can't buy a I made to size for your rifle? That would be the best bet, second to that a for probably won't touch the rubber. However some 80,120 or 240grit sandpaper would probably do it. If you stapled a strip to a piece of timber and rubbed the recoil pad on it I'm sure you'd get it done.

I'll probably get in trouble for quoting a mate but...a mate told me if you put it in the freezes the rubber will harden slightly making sanding easier.

Be sure to tape up the stock and mark the pad out accurately. Good luck with it.

yeah annoying alright,

maybe sitdown one night and watch a few of these and pick whatever tips you can from the vids.

also there are a few cheap grinder/belt linisher combo's that will do the job and are a useful tool for sharpening drills, deburring metal parts etc, I have this one and i can remove the grinding wheel and fit either a wire wheel for rust removal or a buffing wheel for metal polishing. it's not a powerful unit but fine to touch up jobs at home, for big jobs i just take them to work. not bad for 60 bucks

Just not 100% and a little irritating.

Just my 2c but I did the same thing on my Ruger.

Put on a limbsaver prefit which was off by about what you say.

Not a perfect look, but couldn't feel anything off when shooting.

I got a circular saw by Ozito for $35 a few months ago.

Replacement warranty on the thing too so if/when it blows up they just give you another one.

Can't argue with that.

It's not going to take you days.

45m to do it and clean it up?

Can't take that long.

It's not a big deal to fit it then replace with the factory one temporarily again if you needed to take it to a smith later, if it turns out too difficult to do.

Only 2 screws holding the page on normally, just so you know.

The Ozito are great.

Not high quality, but cheap as chips so you can afford one for small projects and if it blows they're replacement warranty.

Done the trick around this house :D
Dear Santa,
Please bring me a Desert Tactical Arms SRS-A1 Rifle in .338 Lapua Magnum.
I'll be good with it, I promise!

A combination belt and disk sander is better for doing recoil pads. Make up a template first that fits the butt perfectly then screw the pad to the template. Then angle the disk table to get the same taper as the stock sides . Put the template down against the table and grind the sides to match the template with constant checking and try the pad for fit on the sides only. Then if it needs it you can keep grinding away at the template and pad as a whole until the sides fit the stock.
Re angle the table as required for the heel and top end of the pad to equal the stock taper and do the same again but staying away from the sides . When the sides and both ends are fitting and at the correct angle to the original stock blend in the 4 missed sections between the 4 grinds until they fit .

Guys at my LGS in perth included fitting in the price. For what I could have saved buying it on line ($15 saving) it was much easier to get them to do it - and they did a good job - better than i could have so it was $15 well spent

That is good sense when you don't have all the right gear .

If they're doing it for free, no brainer.

$40 for one of my LGS to install at theirs I think.
