Wondering what peoples opinions are...

Walnut and blued is the classic, and a smart looking combo

Factor walnut and stainless is becoming a more common option though, can't decide if I like it.

If you can't decide if you like it then you probably don't like it . I think we should try to avoid buying guns on just looks and concentrate on buying guns on need , suitability to a specific purpose . Then if it also has pleasing looks it's a good choice.

I live for synthetic stainless wherever possible as I do give my rifles a hard time and stainless barrels are easier to clean, but I love a nice classic wood/blued rifle and stainless will always be a little heavier than carbon steel.

It is a personal choice.

I'm normally a synthetic stock/ stainless or blued/ wood fan but I have seen stainless barrelled rifles that look good with wood stocks. I think it's a matter of having the right coloured wood, something a little bit lighter usually

I like and own both, walnut looks good with either stainless or blued but then again i like the look of silver scopes on stainless rifles

Synthetic is more practical in my opinion than wood given it's less likely to get damaged in the bush or ute.

I think timber is nicer to shoot because of the way it seems to dampen (or absorb) the shock of firing, not the recoil so much just the vibration

as for stainless weighing more than carbon steel the difference is less than 2% so don't let weight play any part in your decision

I'm picky to the point where I only like stainless in matte finish and it has to be fluted with a light coloured timber. Outside of that I'll take blued any day!

I reckon it also comes down to how well they shoot . Even the best looking gun in the World would fall out of favour wit the owner if it was very inaccurate for the purpose and could not do the job well . Except for collector value items that is . I don't get too wrapped up in how a gun looks until I see how it shoots . Then even an ugly gun is very interesting if it's super accurate .

I like it. My Tikka is stainless/walnut.

I went stainless for the stainless which I've found easier to clean, all being equal though I would always take blued/walnut.

It's just got that something extra

Nail on head. Bang. If you're not looking at it and thinking "oh yeah!" then it's probably not your thing. With that said, i never liked the look of thumbhole stocks but bought one for the more direct approach to the trigger. I'm more comfortable shooting it and the look had grown on me; now i like the look of my little rifle.


Personally wouldn't own a stainless rifle unless it was matt finish (unless it was just a range show pony). I think some look good in walnut either dark or light coloured and others just look wrong, full stop. It's all very subjective to your sense of styling.

Plus, as stated previously, performance out weighs aesthetics. For sure!
