Earmuffs and buds worth it?

Anyone know the score on wearing earbuds and ear muffs?

Does it offer any real protection or is one enough?

Hard to tell just by ear.

Small guns small plugs, big guns I wear both plugs and noise cancelling muffs. All firearm noise will cause damage over time so use all the options to protect yourself and when shooting out in the bush warn your buddies you're going hot so they can protect their hearing.

If someone is using a large caliber or a break near me at the range I find doubling up with buds and muffs helps to cut the noise down. Don't know about the specifics in terms of dB but I know it works for me.

You do realize you can't just generalize by saying ear muffs?

Earmuffs come in different dB ratings, that's the measured amount they reduce a sound by, it will also vary by frequency.

The 37 dB is the measured noise reduction, class 5 is the highest rating.

I find these to be excellent, much higher noise reduction that any electronic muffs I've seen.

I got myself a pair of Sord EP-3 for in-ear and Howard Leight Impact sport muffs for over the top. They each work well, but I'm yet to actually shoot with them. I'm sure the HL muffs will interfere with my butt stock but I'll see how they go.

Without arguing about which brand is best, say a 'good' pair of earmuffs... Does wearing plugs below add anything? This is the core of my question.

Without getting fully technical and talking DB levels, frequency, cancelling blah blah blah... At normal shooting range noise levels there is a noticeable between buds and muffs, and muffs only.

They are class 5 and shoild ok. However unisafe is at the cheaper end of the market. So life expectancy may not be very good. Gets back to how often you will be using them. And you need to be certain you get class 5 muffs.

I double up at the range with the 300wm and the difference is obvious.
