High capacity mags in Aus

Just after some thoughts on this...

I see a people here and there raging on about mag limits here in Aus.

Given that shooter Joe can't have a semi-auto anyway, we're left with target shooting or hunting.

Hunting you can only get so many shots out before the rest of a herd is gone.

Don't you think? Would anyone like more than a 10 shot mag and why?

I'd like to just have normal capacity mags for my pistols as the original equipment manufacturer intended. That would be 15-17 rounds for most pistols, 33 for others. Never felt the need to have a 30 round magazine for hunting rifles irrespective of action type, but I still don't like not be allowed the freedom to choose. And of course my pump action shotgun would be a hell of a lot more competitive with 8-9 rounds instead of the 5 round limit.

The firearms act would not allow a semi auto rim fire greater than 10 rds or a shotgun greater than 5 rounds on the normal cat C license. Forget about cat D for 99% of the shooting community.

In vic, and I believe you're referring to the gun we can own under A/B;

Lever + Pump centrefire = 10 round limit for DETACHABLE mags
Bolt action centrefire = 15 round limit for DETACHABLE mags
Lever + Pump + Bolt rimfire = 15 round limit for DETACHABLE mags

Blind mags or otherwise non-detachable mags have NO LIMIT.

TBH off the top of my head I thought B was 10 rounds as well. After doing a google looks like I might have wandered into cat C semi-auto territory.

Be that as it may I wasn't argument the exact legislation, just the general view.

Limits in general, for whatever category, I've seen people fire up over. Personal opinion here but it's not something I've ever felt like I was missing but not having some huge drum mag hanging out the bottom.

Just wondering what others thought.

That's what people get upset about.

Law abiding citizens having their freedoms removed due to the actions of a few, or the fears of a few in power.

As it is I have wouldn't be fussed by one.

In the good old days with a semi-auto .22lr they were the way to go.

Couldn't go wrong with a 30 round mag there.

For anything other than culling of large herds IMO 4-5 rounds is about perfect for a hunter.

Carrying any more is just extra weight.

10's the magic number for a lot of people. Just look at the popularity of the Scout.

I see people bitch about the mag capacity of larger cartridges which is usually a bit less, usually 3 shots. No idea why.

How many people do you know that have take 3 deer in a row with a bolt action and had a 4th get away?

I'd say very few have taken 2 in a row at the most. Or pigs or goats or whatever your game is.

The extras are good in case of a miss. Three still gives you the chance for 2 misses and a hit. How many more chances do you get?

THE POINT IS.....

If you or I really want to lug around a 50 round mag full of 308win or 223rem or 300 winmag rounds or whatever........even if we may or may not get one round off towarda beast... or 5 rounds at a piece of paper - why not? its already ILLEGAL to carry that rifle where we cant, to carry those loaded rounds where we cant, and to shoot at things and in locations where we cant....mag capacity makes little difference

So whats the point?

Thats the problem with our firearms legislation. Multiple levels of 'wrongdoing' penalties applied by definition to law abiding shooters to stifle their/our lifestyle yet aimed at crims who by definition have no regard for the 'law'....

This is just an observation and I could be wrong? but Australia does seem to write its laws backwards in a sense.

The US isn't without its problems but here we have 'doing X is illegal'. If it's not specifically outlawed, it's legal.

Down under it seems to be 'you make only do X in this circumstance, anything outside this is illegal'. Seems like it could potentially make many harmless mistakes into criminal offences being all compassing like that.

Do your Police have much discretion to ignore innocent breeches in such an event or do they have to follow to the letter?
