Custom safe police approval

Post by vexesus » 09 Mar 2015, 12:53 pm

Query for a potential project.

Buy a safe from the store and you know it's rated A/B/C/H whatever and all good.

If you build a safe yourself though, do you need to have an inspection because of that to make sure it's up to standard? Or do you just do it and make sure it's up to standard?

Not sure if there are laws around manufacturing for this kind of stuff?

For class A /B Just do it and make sure it's up to standard and don't forget weight standards also if it's not bolted down .
There is nothing in the law that says you have to buy a commercial made safe for A and B anyway . It only says what standard the safe has to be to comply with safe storage .
For other classes I am not sure it may pay to check with Police with C/H category .

Keep details of what type of lock, material thickness etc. They will ask.

Custom safes are ok, the door and lock is the only difficult part, not many Cat a-b safes are very thick on sides back top,10mm should be ok for most categories.

If you have concrete walls with a walk in wardrobe you could convert that into a safe by adding a door, look up dealer regs for storage concrete is ok if thick enough.

I think 6mm is minimum for cat C/D/H, I would go 10 in case they move the goal posts

its up to you where you source your safe, you must ensure its secure..... given that most of the safes (cabinets) on the market are crappy chinesy ones... you could do worse than a competently put together custom jobbie.

there's no minimum thickness of steel; A/B can be hardwood or steel, C/D/H must be steel, always of a thickness that is "not easily penetrable"; the accepted thickness being in the realm of 6mm....

There is no pre-use inspection for a home made safe, no.

You're free to do whatever you see fit for storing your firearms without initial approval, it just has to pass an inspection if/when the time comes.

I think Tasmania has just tightened their storage laws outlawing wood.

10mm is minimum for dealers, the walls and roof can be made from concrete with a vault type door if you own and want a large walk in safe.

If you are making your own better to go thicker in case they move the goal posts in future, considering the fact you can be charged with fail to prevent the loss or theft of a firearm if you are robbed better to exceed regulations than just scrape in.

You can calculate the weight if you desire, steel is around 7800 kg per cubic meter,i would make it over the minimum of 150kg for not having to bolt down and still bolt it down.

Late last year I think was Tas stiffened things up a bit.

There were some news articles about it recently.
