Pre-1900 firearms vs imitation laws

Just an interesting point highlighting some of the crap we have in our gun laws, mentioned to me by a fellow shooter.

Pre-1900 firearms - actual firearms - with no available ammunition... No registration or storage requirements.

An imitation firearm - not a working "replica", just a toy - illegal. More than that treated as a 'working' firearm if used in a crime AFAIK.

Both harmless, but the toy is treated more strictly than an actual firearm.

It's the same stupid thing for a mint, usable flintlock built in 1820 (no reg or storage requirements) and an exact working replica of the same rifle built today (register and lock it up).

We do have some pretty weird thinkers putting the laws together. I wonder what happened to the broad shouldered, sun bronzed Aussie of old? Covered in 30plus and quivering at the sight of anything remotely resembling a firearm.

Using one in a hold up, I reckon there is some merit to punishment for that. The guy on the pointy end isn't going to feel any less scared for it being fake. Either way no sympathy for the bastard robber here.....

As a collectable for us LAFO though it's stupid.

Needs to be more context, not blank laws on these things.
