Ridiculous ammo prices!

Post by NukeBOMB88 » 27 Mar 2015, 5:29 pm

So the other day I went to my local Co op and ordered some .223 and .204 ammo, I have always found it easier to go to the co op instead of the gun store because it's much closer but I think that I will be making the drive from now on! $35 a packet for .223 is reasonable but $52 a packet for .204?!? That is ridiculous in my opinion as one LGS was selling the same ammo for about $35 a packet and the other LGS was $42! So what the the hell is the Co op doing? Rant over. :silent:

Hey, I just paid $8.50 each for 2 nylon rifle brushes. Probably made for 8 cents each in china. Just feel ripped off in a big way.

Seriously ol mate you have to learn how to reload for the 204, she's way too expensive to shoot often otherwise. I paid around $40 for some Rem Accutips when I first got mine to give it a run before I got my dies etc and I thought $40 was expensive, man are you being royally rogered at $52!

The 204 really is a reloaders cal no doubt about it and now you know why! :D

Sooner the better mate at those prices it won't take long to recover the costs! :D I can't believe the 204 ammo prices  When you do get around to reloading for your cals I'd recommend stocking up on all the components, saves the hassles when the US goes into meltdown again and the 204 can be hard to get components for at times so always a good idea to stock up on components even when you aren't short on em

When I bought my .204 there were some 50 packs of Hornady loaded rounds on the shelf which from memory were $70 so I bought all 6 boxes. The factory Hornady performs a fraction better then my reloads so I don't reload for it now. Once I get through the remaining factory rounds I'll get back into some load development. I've noticed that many components have jumped between %15 & %30 over the past couple of weeks and I expect it'll get worse. The other option is to post a thread on what you're looking to purchase as possibly others are after the same thing. Then approach several dealers for a "quote". Many of them will offer a reasonable discount if you buy in bulk. Projectiles are a classic case, buy the 100 pack for say $150 or the 500 pack for $500 which is a %33 discount. I buy in bulk when possible, recently picked up 10,000 primers and scored a healthy discount. I can see tough times ahead for the industry if prices continue to head north as many people are not prepared to pay exorbitant amounts on a leisure activity.

I think the whole situation is made even worse due to freight and parcel delivery companies not handling ammo at all. (You'd think it was "sweaty" gelignite)
I'm lead to believe,, that the license to carry "explosives" is hard to get, and at some considerable cost.

Presuming that to be true,, does that mean that the truck / van driver employee is also trained and licensed ???

The same ludicrous situation applies to firearms sent Dealer to Dealer via Aust Post.
Does every Aust Post employee that handles those parcels have a firearms license ??????? I think not.

If Couriers, Parcel Delivery and Freight Companies were able to easily transport ammo, you would find that many people (especially country folk) would then be ordering ammo from the larger retailers, and thus help to keep costs down.

For country folk to take advantage of cheaper prices and specials from the larger retailers,, the only way to do it is to make a special trip which then defeats the purpose.
Or, if you happen to be going to the big smoke anyway, chances are there are not any "Specials" up for grabs at that time.
I do not fear death itself... Only its inopportune timing!
And,,,,It's been proven,,,,, the most trustworthy females in my entire life were all canines.

When you don't live in the "big smoke" you get shafted on ammo prices, big time. A LGS wants $80 for a box of .44 mag factories and other calibres are as ridiculously priced. Thankfully, I reload all calibres that I shoot, but, pricing is also getting a bit silly. How can boxes of lead be considered dangerous cargo?

I recently visited the place that can't be named and the savings I achieved on some factory ammo and brass were extraordinary compared to my LGS. Also spent a huge amount on "bits & pieces" that my LGS missed out on. I want to support my LGS as much as possible, but...

I'm only using my LGS now if I want to purchase another rifle or handgun.

I pay around $250 for freight from these people and easily save twice that over what my local charges, but you have to buy in bulk.

I'd recommend stocking up on all the components, saves the hassles when the US goes into meltdown again and the 204 can be hard to get components for at times so always a good idea to stock up on components even when you aren't short on em

And you wonder where the problem comes from? ;)

Having said that, shooting has been growing in popularity in the USA and here as a sport so demand has risen everywhere. Also the AUD/USD has not helped.

Nope I know where the problem comes from, not enough production to keep up with demand. (the US firearms owner has been on tender hooks for a while now trying to keep in front of Obama and the anti guns mob constantly wanting to change the rules)

The smart ones stock up to weather the storm and lock in today's prices, the dumb ones sit around bitching about it - me I won't be running out of anything in the next 2-5yrs so I don't care what happens and on top of that I've locked in a better price than what will be on offer in 2-5yrs time so I'm in front on a $$$ point of view too. :D

I'm with you Bigfella :D
Have been searching hi and lo for Federal GM215M Primers only to be told that there's no stock and there's a mass of them on back order with the importer. Found some last week so bought 10,000 so I don't get caught short next time the importer is out of stock. 10,000 will keep me going for a little while :D

Sorry Nukebomb..... but you handed over your cash, and a lot of it, damn well too much, for a load of pipsqueak rounds.

I think in future when someone asks the common question of whether to go for 204R or 223Rem.... there should be a reference to a guy once paid $105.90 for 40 Rounds!!! Thats a big LOL,

you could have bought a loading press, powder, brass and projjies and loaded 200 of the rounds!! OK maybe not ALL the gear and that many....

All right, ease up on nuke time....

Last time I bought ammo for the 223Rem, which is the wife's (apart from the 22s, I own nix smaller than 30cal), I thought I got taken, and it was 11.50 a pack!!! Another time I noticed the dealer was selling off his Norma ammo so I paid 26 a pack for 300WinMag !!! with premium Noslers (IIRC) !

You my friend got 'Cucumbered', just who is this co-op, co-opting with?

Son inlaw got one of these for about $190 + $45 for a 2 die set. A good start. Better gear around but u pay for it. I have a set of their dies and they seem ok.
At the prices u are paying it wouldnt take long to pay for its self and u get better ammo too.

I'm not generally the doom and gloom type but it's not looking good for ammo prices anytime soon. Our $ is almost on par with N.Z and dropping to 0.7585 with the U.S overnight and falling. I've been to 4 different gun shops in the past week and the common theme seems to be less and less stock on shelves.

It baffles me.... the USA is going to the crapper... its craphole of an economy has been talked-up incessantly, yet our comparatively good economy (yes, it is) hasnt stopped the slide of our dollar as valued against the USD....

As is plain to see, the Reserve Bank has dropped the rates for the sole purpose of de-valuing the Aussie dollar further TO INCREASE EXPORT VALUE OF DIRT.....hoping to at least stop the slide in excise income levels . The MAJOR side effect is however, given that WE ARE CONSUMERS of SOLELY IMPORTS - SO IT HITS US! including at the gunshop,

So yes. Buy up.
