Transport with rifle

G'day everyone,
I'm new to shooting and was wondering a few things as I don't have my own gun yet.
What are the Qld laws on transporting a rifle on a motorcycle to a gun range etc? Cant find anything about it. I don't have a bike yet either, but I'm getting one and was just wondering if rifle transport is allowed.

I think not! , all us shooters and hunters need to seen as responsible people that would bring unwanted attention , if and when you get licensed one should have the firearm covered when transporting , its in your own interest to keep the rifle from getting damaged and to keep it accurate. I have a very small key safe bolted in my vehicle to accommodate my rifle bolts . Perhaps you should go down to your local range and see the amount of gear you will need to test shoot , rifle , ammo , spotting scope , cleaning gear etc etc , not suitable for a bike stick to your car mate

Hi Rambo and welcome to the forum,

there is a search box top *edit LEFT that is helpful with topics that have been thrashed out before. By all means resurrect them if you want or need to.
Also getting legal advice online isn't always the best or easiest way to get an answer. Asking the relevant authority might help.

Thanks for replies, I'm new so thought someone might know the answer was all, seems not. Probably better to ring the police next week and see what the go is, it may be impossible but who knows. I do have a mate in NSW that carries his hand gun on his bike to the range, but he thought rifle would be a different deal due to concealment etc.

What the laws says is one thing, and what is prudent is another.

I do not believe the law prevents you carrying one on a bike, so long as it is in a case covered etc. I would think for the sake of the gun it should be protected from the environment more so.

An Alloy case would not be too obvious and would meet the requirements.

Read the law. It says what it means and means what it says. Anything else is opinion, (including the cops) and that is from a lawyer who really knows his government legislative law.

By the way there is a guy who attends Belmont……with a rifle and on his bike!

Frustratingly for bike riders any information on it seems to be omitted from the various bits of literature.

At one time or another I've been through the various firearms acts, police web pages and info sheets and never seen it written that you can't transport a firearm in a bike.

All examples (and that's examples, not clearly defined legal defined scenarios) all revolve around cares.

I'm inclined to think that while you're allowed to there is a strong preference against it so they're careful not to mention it anywhere. If in doubt, as it might be designed to do, people will opt for the car over their bike.

Just like an unlocked car……the weapon must be under your direct supervision so you can't just walk off and leave the "locked case" bungee strapped to your bike. But while under your supervision and concealed it its bag/case with any ammor stored according to the laws applicable, you are legally allowed to do it. Simple as that.

As Lorgar has pointed out, I too have never seen any restriction. Often laws are complex and convoluted but when you weed out the truth, it makes sense that there is no restriction for a good reason.

Having said that we need less laws and made simpler…..but that is another story!

And there it is in a nutshell. Your opinion versus the opinion of the officer charging you. The prosecution council's opinion V the defence council's opinion, both of whom are trying to sway the presiding judge's opinion on a law that was dreampt up by some bureaucrat with no practical knowledge of the subject, tabled in Parliament by a Minister with very little or no practical knowledge of the subject, passed into legislation by other Ministers who have no practical knowledge of the subject. Said laws are then enforced by the above officer, who has no very little or no practical knowledge of the subject, but in who's opinion the laws read thus ...................................

Yep……and I think the best way is to know the law, carry it with you and if challenged ask them to show you otherwise. Most police do not want to be made a fool of, especially in court. So be nice about it and explain politely where the law actually stands. If they fail to see common sense approach to reading exactly what it says, well then you are looking for a lawyer!

But you are 100% correct with this comment

Unfortunately in that situation you're still paying for a lawyer while the copper is getting paid to be wrong

Sadly this is the case.

But what can you do……even if you do the right thing you have to be prepared to be guilty until you prove your innocent. A problem the world over.

Stressful way to think but a friend of mine has even mentioned putting aside a little cash in case something goes wrong for him one day.

He doesn't do anything stupid or reckless but I guess you worry reading the occasional BS story where someone gets screwed over and worry it'll happen to you.
