Having a mental blank here... What was the thing a few years ago with dodgy stations adding something to their unleaded pumps to water down the fuel, caused damage to a lot of peoples.

Something from sugar cane rings a bell?

Most likely ethanol, if not done properly can do quite a bit of damage. Hence you see some of the export holden dunny doors have quite a few mods because in some countries they run E85.

DJ
Dirty diesel is a real problem in some servo's.
I always try to stick with high volume turn over servo's, but sometimes you have to run the gauntlet and hope.

Just a bit of info.
Diesel bug are microbes that live in the water diesel interface, and they survive on the water. Now every diesel tank will have some trace amounts of water either from bad fuel or simple condensation. This is why its always a good idea to use a fuel conditioner every time you fuel up, to kill the bug and break the water down so it can be passed through and burnt in the engine.
Also diesel with a bio diesel component can also be effect as well.

toluene was one scam additive

no excise on imported toluene so fuel distributors and or servos were adding it to unleaded to boost profit margin.

Yep that's why I add Fuel Doctor to every tank - seems to do the trick as far as I can tell.

Yeah that was it.

I've heard some blokes were mixing it to their own fuels to increase the octane rating for high compression motors, don't know if that's true though.

I'm heading out of town this weekend, I might drop some 2 stroke oil in for the return journey and see if it makes any difference to noise or economy.

You should notice a noise diff and smoother running (that's what it did to mine) didn't notice any economy diff.

Thanks BFS just thought it may have a negative effect on economy though would be immeasurable I suppose.

What ratio did you use when adding it to a tank?

The recommended ratio is 200:1 - I only added the one dose to my tank to try and as I said it definitely made it quieter when cold and when driving in general and it ran smoother (haven't added it again at this stage) as I'm wanting to test my fuel economy since doing the ECU Remap and 3" Exhaust Upgrade.

I might put some in again at some stage.

Toly good solvent, not good for fuel systems if you don't know what you are doing.

Yes toly will boast your RON in unleaded fuel depending on how much you add, but again unless you know what your are doing and have access to a knock engine tester I wouldn't do it. Also need to know what materials are in the fuel system as toly will attack some meterials.

If servos are doing it I'd say it's to increase the cash flow rating of their high compression wallets :problem:
