well i was trying to sell a 270 barrel and after regretting selling my 7mm mag sporter

i have decided to do a semi-custom 270-308 .

any suggestions (besides a different cal) are most welcome .

Sitting right between the 260rem and the 7mm08rem. Sounds like it would work pretty good. Is there any history of such a beast? Will you have to get custom reamer and dies made?

What action will you use?
Zastava do the M70 which is based on a Mauser action. Action only is about $500 i think. Get the smith to tidy it up a bit and whack the barrel on it!

What weight & length is the barrel?
What style of stock are you going for?

There is always the .270 Ackley Improved which would only require a chamber reamer.

Get an extra 150fps or so out of it, load it up with some mid weight pills like a 130gr and get a reaaal flat shooting medium game rifle out of it

So basically you want to build a 7-08

The only thing is bullet selection and barrel twist. A 7-08 can shoot I love range of bullets including the heavy high BC bullets but I'm pretty sure heavier .270 bullets are hard to come by

Would certainly be an interesting project and I would love to see the end result. A question for you though why stick with the .308 case and not go something more exotic?

what do you mean by suggestions? different chambering with the same claibre (calibre as in hole size) or action suggestions ??
me, if a had a 270 barrel and I couldnt get rid of it( ) I'd just go the win....off the shelf dies and brass. else theres another option; the 277GS (Gianni Sabatti) which is the same bore but case wise is based on a necked down 8x68 and falls between the 7mmWSM and 7mmRUM in volume..... its hot, and die are listed.

As Gwion mentions, the Zasty is available, theyve been producing mauser98s for almost a century, theyre no newbie,
Best of all currently offered for 490!!! I cant mention where though to say its good value is an understatement. you could pick up a 270WIN or a 308WIN, give it a run, then sell the barrel and screw yours on, or just leave your barrel in the cupboard...
Or pay $9more and they'll keep the barrel and stock

And for a completely silly suggestion; what about a 284WIN necked down to a 277???

Would make for a low-recoil .270. Game legal in all states and friendlier on the shoulder for you and easier for new/young shooters too.

Not silly at all, The .284 was designed to do exactly what the .270 does only in a short action. unfortunately it was chambered in all the wrong guns.

In a mauser length action it's an awesome thing but there will be little recoil reduction over the .270 because it will most likely shoot the same weight bullets at around the same velocities

It will never come close to the performance of the 7RM but would be a fair step up from the .308 case and shares the same bolt face
