Getting a Firearm under a complementary activity

Questions about Queensland gun and ammunition laws. QLD Weapons Act 1990.

Getting a Firearm under a complementary activity

Post by ladibackjack » 07 Jul 2015, 5:59 pm

I recently got my firearms licence with the genuine reason of sports and target shooting and have submitted my PTA for a firearm to suit that reason. I also want to get involved in recreational shooting to hunt on friends properties. This is a complementary activity covered by my license so am I allowed to posses a firearm for recreational shooting?

If this is true and I can get a firearm on the PTA I need to state why the weapon is required and why the need can not be satisfied in another way. If for example I wanted a .308 caliber rifle what would I say?

back in the US, we have to use calibers that allow game to be taken down ethically.

We have hogs here and I know that you have them in Australia. We use .308 rifles to take them down. Probably just state that you intend on hunting hogs and .308 is the only caliber that can take them down ethically. If my memory serves me correct, I think that is what my pal in Queensland used when i visited him once before and he showed me one of his rifles and I asked him how he got that. he also gave me the low-down on Queensland firearms laws; you guys have it very tough.

Short answer - No. You are only licensed to use the firearm for the purposes mentioned on your license. In the past, holding a firearms license would be enough - and most would overlook it with good discretion and common sense. However these days it pays to dot your i's, etc...

Personally I would contact LDR for clarification. I've found them fine to talk too. Additionally - all it takes to get hunting added to your license you will either require a letter from a landowner stating that they give you permission to hunt on their property (they will need to include property address, and size) or get a letter from a department such as the DPI (or equivalent) for hunting on government land / state forests. The license will only show 'hunting' and not the location, so this would cover you elsewhere.

Chances of being caught out are very small. I don't think there would be anything to stop you from sighting in your firearm on your friends property (?), but if you were caught hunting in a state forest, etc with only 'target shooting' on your license, or caught in the act of shooting pests, you could be rolled.

Since it's that simple to get hunting added as a reason, I'd just do it. Will make everything (including acquisition) much easier for you later...

Yep. Contact you firearms branch/division/whatever they call themselves in your state and get hunting added to your licence.

Check your license it should have RE1 on it. Queensland give you that automatically even when you apply for target shooting. That allows for rec shooting/hunting.

" I need to state why the weapon is required "
The term "weapon "is either military or gun grabber speak, my steel cap work boots are weapons if used as such but not otherwise.
Not trying to be critical, or a Pedant, but when we start using Newspeak we are accepting the propaganda of the left.
No offence meant.

Are you member of the SSAA?

They're a registered hunting club and can be your proof for target shooting and hunting. That membership is your proof/reason/need to have your license amended to go both.

He's not having a go mate.

It's just about casting the right light on us. Us LAFO had hunting rifles and target shooting rifles.

The Police and especially the media love the buzzword "weapon" and all the negative connotations it carries.

I've never use my rifles as a weapon so don't want to be bungled in with the same language as criminals who hurt people or soldiers who kill people.
