Primary production licence

Post by NukeBOMB88 » 13 Jul 2015, 4:11 pm

Hey guys I was just wondering if any of you know if it's legal to shoot my CAT A/B rifles at my local gun range seeing as I have a primary producers licence? I'm wanting to get into a bit of target shooting and I know I can't use my CAT C shotty off-farm but what about my A/B rifles? Thanks

Doesn't your licence have the Genuine Reasons listed on it for which you are allowed.

In NSW mine has on the back...

"Genuine Reasons for holding this Licence.

AB - Rec Hunting / Vermin Control
ABC - Primary Production

Then...

AB - Target Shooting"

Target shooting was added afterwards when I started shooting in Registered National Competitions, otherwise I was not allowed to enter the competition.

That is not required to just go to a Range and spend a day, even if it's a Club Competition Target Shoot or just Sighting In...

My Category C also allows me to take my restricted firearms to adjoining properties, one of which I manage and it is also noted as part of my own land so his adjoining properties are also mine to shoot on with permission from the owners.

This is in NSW.....

When I had a quastion about any of this I rang my Firearms Registry, especially regarding the Cat C and adjoining properties.

If you also have target shooting on your license as a purpose of use alongside the primary production you should be fine. If not you may need to have it added before you can

BTW...once you add Target Shooting to your licence you will most likely then need to attend and register at a Rifle Range a set number of times per year. In NSW this is 4 times minimum. If you don't attend they will threaten to take your licence off you.

No drama here as I go to quite some number of 2 day matches which gives me 3 registrations each match, 1 for a Friday practise day.

.

May want to edit this.

Surely they would only look at the 'Target Shooting' as a reason if you didn't fulfil the minimum requirements to have it included as a reason, leaving you with everything else you already have as a reason.

Something to clarify directly with LRD.

It most certainly was clarified with NSW FAR.

It is up to the Licence Holder to remove that Genuine Reason if it no longer applies or the Licence Holder can no longer comply with the conditions. If there is no excuse submitted to FAR for not attending they will cancel the Licence... the whole Licence. The SSAA will send out letters prior warning that your attendence numbers are not up to scratch.

Same with Primary Production. If I cease to qualify running a business then I no longer comply.

This may not apply in other States but it's up to you to know what the requirements are.

Ok, if that is entirely correct I am stuck with feeling the powers to be a genuinely off this planet in this instance. Removing one reason, the reason you no longer have would make sense. Not presuming the other GENUINE reasons plural are also no longer valid. Just dumb.

If the ONLY reason someone has on their licence is 'Target Shooting' and they don't comply with the minimum shoots prescribed, then I agree with the licence removal option with prior notice and warning.

I have not seen minimum attendance stated for Queensland target shooting condition.
I can't find it anywhere. The pistol shooters have it though...but not A/B licence holders.

so what states have this?

It also depends on your local range - does it offer shooting for 12gauge, 22LR or is it a Full Bore target range etc.
If you have hunting/primary production you can still attend the range to sight in, you don't need to join a full time range discipline.

Just FYI in WA if you're licensed for recreational hunting you can also use it at a range, but not vice versa.
