New Ammo laws VICTORIA ???

Post by anthillinside » 13 Jul 2015, 6:53 pm

OK I've been busy for a couple of months and not kept up with the gossip but…
Needed some primers and powder, so went to a not so LGS
1000 primers, no can only give you 500 ???
Powder?, well nothing I could use, so I got some factory rounds.
Hand over License.
He proceeds to write down ALL details in a Register, and even requires a phone number.
Quizzed him as to why? new requirements of Dealer License.
I knew this was the crap NSW had but not in the fee state of Vic.

Have our Vic. dealers been hit with additional record keeping requirements?

Strangely enough 3 hours later knock on the door, Firearms Storage inspection
I wasn’t home but my son was he is also licensed, he told me the inspection was quick and painless and inspection passed.

I’m getting paranoid, have the Greens taken over and no one told me? :silent:
Or was I getting the 3rd degree or told BS by the LGS. That register certainly had a fair few pages of entries.

I've never read or heard anything about further record keeping requirements for ammunition sales in Victoria.

The only sales record book requirement I know of relates to the sale of "blasting explosives" (whatever that is) and exists in the Dangerous Goods (Explosives) Regulations of 2000.

Might be a regulation change. I dont think they need to be passed by parliment. But not certain. Regs might also give the police the right to administer some part of the regs the way they want,,.... if you get my meaning.

Didn't have to write anything down last time I bought ammo. Just showed my license. Probably 2 months ago.

Bought some ammo a couple of weeks ago. Just the usual licence check, that's all.

The last time I bought ammo from that GS was about 6 months ago and a present of license was all that was required.
As I mentioned I've not been keeping up with the news, so I thought if there had been a change then the members here would have posted about it.
A quick look around found nothing so I posted.
Getting an unannounced inspection the same day was a bit of a coincidence (I don’t like coincidences) but wasn’t really a surprise because I’ve just changed some license details.
I’ll be interested in seeing if the recording of details for ammo purchases spreads in Victoria, if not I’ll be asking a few more questions if it happens again.

No arrangement necessary...... a condition of your licence is that you agree that you may be inspected at ANY reasonable time. A telephone call to announce an asspection... sorry, inspection is par for the course. If however its not a reasonable time or not convenient, say you're putting the kids to bed or about to go out or have an alternative appointment - thats when you can suggest an alternative time.

The inspection didn't worry me. (I wasn't there!)
I was expecting one soon as I've just changes address
With more than one LAFO in the house we all know waht to do.

The thing that did worry me was the recording of FULL personal details including a phone number in a ledger tat sits on a LGS counter for anyone to see.

Most LGS I've gone to only need to see a license for ammo. But there's one I go to quite regularly and they have it all keyed into a computer what you buy from them with all your details
if you don't get stuck, your not trying hard enough

So far it looks like just this one shop has changed it's procedures.
I wonder why?

I would refuse and object if they wanted to record your details.....take your $$ else where. Its enough of a security risk to have your details recorded for firearm transaction in an open book for all and sundry to read..................

Yeah, now it looks like it's not official I won't be "providing details" again.
I also won't be using that shop for a while, probably a very long while.

I swear the shops don't even know the details.

Some just sight the license, some write minor details, some more, some all.

Outside the biggies like firearm permits I swear they make the rest up as they go?

No better than forums probably. "Some guy" told them they need to "record details" so they buy a book for it

There's always been the requirement to report suspicious behavior / purchases - thats how they busted those tools who were about to 'invade' the Sydney Military base as I recall a few yrs ago... they ordered like a pallet of centrefire ammo, well maybe a few cases.....

If you go and grab a brick or 2 of rimfire; I wonder if thats 'reportable', it is a thousand rounds and all! could prevent the great bunny bust of 2015....

"RealNick" Now you mention it the sales guy was a young buck and thinking back it was the same ledger as the one they used when I purchased a rifle from them.
I never used to jump at shadows, strange how I am so ready to believe the worst about just about anything now, not just about shooting related stuff.
Am I older and wiser? Or am I like a mistreated dog and expect a kicking every time?
I think I need to lighten up, I'm going to look for a thread to releive some stress ....
Off to LURK I go

When I purchased powder and primers( late last year) the dude at the LGS took a photocopy of my licence and hand wrote my phone #. Said it was required since I purchased powder!! Wonder where did that come from? :(

Not everyone has many stores close though.

If there are only 1-2 stores within an hour or so off you and they both want details you're going to get stuck :(

Thats true,
The thing is to know the facts and raise the point.
If you can NOT buy then thats the best option.
But if you need to, at least if you know the facts you can argue the point and let them know your not happy.
That was the reason of my post, I hadn't kept up to date and wasn't sure.
Now I'm back up to speed it won't happen again without very good reason.
