.308 Varmint Projectile

Post by MalleeFarmer » 21 Jul 2015, 8:25 pm

G'day all I'm wondering about some light explosive projectiles for Varmints I already reload the 165gr SST for medium-large game and target but I'd like something for short-medium range varminting no further than 400m. Something between 100-120gr I've already used the Speer 130gr HP they're explosive but would prefer something quicker and flatter

I've used 110g to 125g projectiles in a .30-06 and they work just fine. Should be alright in a .308.
Browning BL-22 lever action...open sights
T3 Varmint .204 Ruger...Meopta Meostar 4-16X44
T3 Lite .30-06 Sprg...Aimpoint Hunter 1X red dot

....that will do me

Guessing you have google searched 308 varmint projectile?

Looked up the brand names websites and searched them?

110gr .308 Sierra Varmint Bullets is all I found in my first google search.

Plenty here if you can get them

I know my .22-250 is currently Out of action. So I'm needing this in the meantime

I've used 125g Winchester Super X and some 110g projectiles a mate of mine loaded up....I forget what they were. They both worked fine in a .30-06.

ADI list a load for the 110Gr Barnes TSX FB which should be near perfect on Varmint sized targets but damn expensive at $68.45 for a 50 pack. A quick Google of "Barnes Projectiles" will give you a list of suppliers in Aus, just avoid Voldemort in the banana state if you can :)

nothing more violent than a 110 vmax or varmageddon in a 308 we used to get 3300 to 3385 in ADI 92 brass

My old Sako 22-250 loved the Sierra 42gr JHP's but they aren't made anymore :( Lightest 30cal I've used is the 130Gr Speer #2005 in my 300WbyMag and they were unimpressive @ 1 MOA, Berger 185Gr #30513 produce consistent .25 MOA (by consistent I mean me and not the rifle).

Possibly the Nosler 165Gr BT #30165 is suitable? Not overly light but should travel around the 2650-2750FPS mark which will red mist most small game while not overly heavy on recoil.

Just a thought. Might be an idea to just look at the barrel twist rate. The 110g projectiles are about as light as you can go on 30 cal. They may not suit the barrel. I have not had any experience with them but I have heard often they are not particularly accurate. Just a thought.

Called my LGS they can't get any of the 110s nosler Hornady nothing. Getting 125gr Speer TNTs hopefully they do the trick

Haha. Varmint soup would be right. Apparently the 125gr TNTs are extremely violent and probably even too violent to use on medium game as they may not penetrate enough. I've heard you have to be careful with hot loads as they have a very thin jacket and can seperate in flight. :wtf:

Any .308 on a pest is going to be "extremely violent" ;)

You're right about thin jacket bullets, with excess velocity they can have problems coming apart or distorting in flight. Either way making the accuracy useless.
