Gun socks worth it?

Post by halberg » 09 Dec 2013, 1:55 pm

G'day,

Do you guys reckon gun socks are worth the cost/trouble?

I have 3 rifles at the moment, there is room in the safe so they're not knocking/scratching around on each other constantly.

I'm away from the coast so no salt air to bother them.

The bloke at my LGS was talking them up as a must for protection but seems like it would just be a pain in the ass putting them in/out of the socks constantly.

Opinions?

For all you've described I'd say you can live without one.

Protecting against knocks and insulating against rust is their purpose, so if you're comfortable that's not a problem...

Even if you've got plenty of space in the safe, but dings and dents happen.

A sock will protect against these, however infrequent they might be.

If you don't mind a few little imperfections over time, fair enough to give it a miss.

Yes, it is a bit of a pain putting them in and out of the socks, but how constantly do you really do it? Daily, weekly, monthly?
3 rifles isn't many to be worrying about the extra effort of a gun sock. We've got 10 in our safe, and I make sure the sock goes back on whenever they go back in the safe, unless I know they're coming out again in the next day or so.

How much humidity do you have up your way? I found that even with the desiccant crystals in our safe, rust was beginning to form on some of them.
So I bought the Vapor Control Inhibitor gun socks for all of them, and also put a Zerust capsule in the safe.
Small price to pay for protection from rust and knocks, I reckon.

Those capsules are a brilliant idea I reckon.

If you're not fussed about knocking them, no worries.

Won't help you with rust though, so a capsule would still be a good idea.

If you're regularly using it, cleaning it etc. meh.

One thing I'll give those 'zerust' bags though is I reckon they're a great idea for long term storage if you're not going to be using your rifle for a while.

Zip em up and leave em with no fear of rust for 2 years.

There is a great video of zerust where they put a nail in a bag of water.

One bag's normal, one is there special one.

They time lapse the video forwards and rust is flowing off the nail in the regular bag and nothings happening on the zerust bag,
