I have a stash of water purification tablets. Im not prepping, but flooding is possible which may pollute the water supply temporarily, and purification tablets are dirt cheap.
Oh, and they're not iodine based so safe for people allergic to iodine fish and shellfish

How is rule of law going to break down?
You’d have to start with a citizens revolt.

In the unlikely event the citizens uprising doesn’t get crushed, then do they become the rulers and make the law …. I think not.
Government breakdown would result in a military takeover.

Read this:

http://ferfal.blogspot.com/2008/10/thou ... -2005.html

It's happened many times in the last 20 years.

Anybody who thinks anything they want will always be available on the grocery shelves never had grandparents that lived through the Great Depression. And they never lived through the Petroleum crisis of the 1970s, the rolling blackouts in California of the 90s, Hurricane Katrina, the economic collapse of Argentina ( http://ferfal.blogspot.com/2008/10/thou ... -2005.html ), Serbia, Bosnia ( http://www.naturalnews.com/040249_Bosni ... egies.html ), 5 million homes without electricity of food or fuel (or water or medicine) on the East Coast in 2012, we can keep at this all day.

In this day of Just on Time Delivery inventory control, where nothing is stored anywhere and most countries have 1 to 3 months of food (unprocessed grain) in storage max, tell me which is more silly: Making sure to prepare for hard times that have ALWAYS happened, and are not the exception to the rule, or thinking, "We've had a good run the past 20 years. So I think nothing bad could ever happen again, I'll live paycheck to paycheck, I'll always have a job, and there will always be food on the shelves."

In 2012 I lived without power or fuel for weeks and the shelves of grocery stores were stripped bare on Day 1. Society is very fragile and precarious.

Everybody likes good times, smart people save money for recessions or life interruptions. Some people laugh at those who prepare for Mad Max. Well, there are a lot of real shades of grey between recessions and Mad Max, and they happen in modern countries all the time. Having your family freeze, or starve, or trying to figure out how to get blood thinners to keep Mum alive or insulin to keep your teenage daughter alive is a real bitch when all your phones are dead and there's only enough gas in your car to make it to a gas station that is closed because of no fuel.

Some very valid points there. Its easy to forget that when you have lived 2 generations problem free.

I'm kind of lucky, living out of areas means that I am prepared without necessary needing to think about worst case scenarios.

I keep enough fuel to keep my freezer frozen for months, not that I'd need it, there's loads of livestock and game around here.
I have a lifetime supply of water, keep bulk rice, pasta and tinned fruit.
I recon that if everything went pair shaped tonight I'd be good for 4 weeks before I needed to think about finding more carbohydrates and thats for a family of 4 eating generous rations.

I would think that most Australians would be hit hard if the shops emptied and the power went out, only those in cyclone and flood prone areas have a real sense of what thats like and I would hope that most of them are reasonably prepared for that. I would bet that only some are.

I do wonder about this. There's a lot going on "behind the scenes" that if the general public knew about, toilet paper would be a rich commodity.

In the event of "the end of times" would you want to be wandering around a desolate and probably radiated to the max world if it came to that? I seriously doubt that a nuclear war would ever start because the nuclear powers know that once they start exchanging missiles, what's left?

Yes, there's the "secret weapons" that you hear about that allegedly do all kinds of things. I'm sure each side has their own versions also.

Enjoy life, go shooting and start writing letters to make sure our sport isn't destroyed is my attitude now.

Under most scenarios we have seen the police, and finally the Army, seem to have food, fuel, electric, communications, real money, and ammo LONG after society runs out of it. Oh, I forgot the Tax Collector. He looks well-fed a year into the disaster as well :)

Thinking you will go around robbing people and stores at gunpoint after your week's worth of food and medicine runs out is not much of a plan. It reminds me of the Simpson's episode where Sheriff Wiggam wanted to draw straws to eat people 5 minutes after the plane crashed :D

Title, i could be wrong here but this might be another cultural misinterpretation of the laconic Australian sense of humour.

We will tend to understate or even make contrary statements to emphasize our point in a humourous way.

Joking that your plan is to go out and rob people who have been prepping is a way of pointing out that there will be a butt load of looters, gangsters and ne'erdowells doing exactly this. That's the way i took it, anyway.

Either that, or the BigFella is actually Chief Wiggam....

Although i never thought of it as a "bug out" kit, for years and years i kept a plastic tub full of 'emergency rations', one full of camp cook ware, a water cube, a tent and sleeping matt: all ready to go: in the shed or laundry or where ever i had room for it where i was living.

I did this to save time if the weather was looking good and i wanted to take off for a fishing expedition at short notice. Save time shopping ans stocking up. I could grab a rod or two, some tackle, pack my back pack with enough clothes and a sleeping bag and jump in the car and be on the road in 1hr, rather than taking half a day to pack.

Not that organised these days but i live in the hills now and don't have to take off too far to go for a fish.

Ahhh...Adelaide, The city of churches....where old people go to die :)

Last time I was in Adelaide I was evicted from the casino for drunk and disorderly along with a senior exec from the ANZ. I don't remember much of that night except the sight of the exec on a table with his shirt off singing along to a Kiss song, it was at this point we got booted. I may have to take up drinking again so I can remember all the fun I had when I was drunk cause buggered if I can remember it sober.

My cousin is hassling me to bury a couple of shipping containers under the slab for the shed. The only way I'd do something like that was if it could be done without anyone knowing. There's no secrets in small towns and if a local saw the containers then the whole town would know within a week and there goes the security of a secret bunker.
Admittedly I did get a few tips from the show, like vacuum packing ammo and primers though in reality it's probably not really necessary given they have massive shelf lives anyway. There's something about watching crazy people try to justify their paranoia that I find entertaining.

I'm starting to wonder if having a nation full of stoners is more desirable then having a nation full of alcoholics? legalize cannabis already? lmao "hey man want a hug and a weed cookie" is better then "hey man want a punch in the face and a broken bottle to the liver" lol

Also on another note...I only prepare for small disasters, floods, wild fires, cyclones and what ever other natural disaster? but I tell you what if something out of the ordinary were to happen and something that bad occured forcing civilisation to come grinding to a halt either semi permanently or permanently then they would have the last laugh don't you think? lmao
besides If the Government thinks its a great idea to prepare themselves for the unlikely not so ordinary emergencies then I think that says it all? probably best we don't call em crazy and just say something like " each to their own " lol Just my 2 cents! ^_^ :friends: :drinks:

edit: after all the Government prep as another form of insurance policy...so why can't we?

Well fellas, you'll all get your chance to test your preps starting on the 12th of this month with a big meteor shower and culminating on the 15th of September when we get hit with a 2 mile wide asteroid. The stoner issue has me intrigued.

I've had a number of spinal surgeries where I'm prescribed the purer and more acceptable version of heroin. They call it OxyContin, Oxynorm (oxymoron??), Ms-Contin etc.

I can't take these before I go to the range and I have to grind my teeth until I get home. I guess "you get used to it" happens (except cold or when storms are approaching; I'm a walking barometer). I imagine there'd be some still floating around in my system, but, I'm only ever "off with the fairies" when I'm at home. Not big on the idea of hurting someone in an accident. If I feel strange at the range (as has happened, I don't shoot).

Now. I've got 4 x emails from neurosurgeons and pain management specialists who suggest that the consumption of cannabis would be a good thing for me. Supposed to help me sleep better and helps relax you, so, I stay home, don't interfere with anyone, nor cause any drama, I'm a criminal and I lose my gun licence. I won't smoke pot because I don't want to lose my gun licence. You smoke a joint on Friday night. Get tested Monday, it's positive and I'm done for driving under the influence of a prohibited drug? Guns, reloading gear and ammo confiscated and you can't sell it.

So, if I want to take up cannabis, I'm deemed a criminal and a hippy and all those other ignorant comments that are coming from ill informed people. Hippies like wine. Anyone on here that drinks wine want to be called a hippy loser? Or a hippy alcoholic loser?

I'm not an advocate of anyone under the age of 18 getting stoned or pissed. Anyone under 18 whose consuming a mind altering substance shouldn't be doing it. Why? Because the brain is still growing. Kids that develop mental illness or other "emotional problems" who have smoked cannabis have cannabis labelled as the reason why they developed the illness.
I've read and seen parents say this. This isn't my personal opinion because I'm not a doctor and I don't have any kids. Just an observation.

Give a kid bottle of bourbon or whatever per day (or instead of having a joint, have a few drinks instead) that has a high alcohol content and see what happens to his/her brain over a few years. Get my point on this?

I'm finding that as I get older, the amount of lies and cover ups that are slowly leaching out that I believed to be true or points in life to believe in (the same way that my moral compass points), is extraordinary bulls**t and I'm highly embarrassed to admit that I've had my head in my ass for quite a while that I'm slowly extracting.

I don't see any harm in stating that you believe cannabis should be decriminalised. Abiding by laws and agreeing with them are two separate things.

Besides, the argument to decriminialise cannabis for recreational and/or medical use is getting rather confused with the argument to legalise commercial growing of fiber hemp. Although both are cannabis products, they come from distinctly different plants that have absolutely no cross over in production values.

Legally regulated and separate industries of both hemp fiber cannabis and medicinal/recreational marijuana cannabis would likely be an economic boon for this country. Providing employment and income to rural areas by providing a cash crop option that can be readily grown on marginal land that couldn't viably produce food crops or sustain grazing, as well as alleviating the economic burden of prosecuting the use of what is largely a "mostly harmless" substance.

Still, i don't know how relevant it is to "bugging out"...

I'm not "pro" drugs but I do think that just criminalizing everything solve nothings.

On the subject of cannabis Colorado legalized it a while back and the state hasn't collapsed in on itself. And they bank balance is certainly looking good from the taxes.

Better to have things open and transparent where there is competition to create a good product instead of sending it underground where people can who knows what poison and users will have no recourse because they can't go to anyone without being charged.
