G'day from a junior

Post by Heckler303 » 03 Aug 2015, 5:02 pm

Hey everyone,

I'm Heckler303, also known as a junior shooter from Tasmania, with a big passion for guns, so I thought I might introduce myself to the forum :D

I have been watching this forum for a loooong while, trying to decide whether it would be worth it or not to try and put my voice into some of the discussions going on here, which most of them seem to be pretty well set (other forums I've looked at are usually full of either 'tacticool' neckbeared euphorics bearing cheap Mosins or people with their nose generally too far up in the air).

I fired my first big bore shot this year at a rifle range, a Dale in .308, which made me appreciate what such a great cartridge the 7.62 NATO is AND get me into the hobby/sport. I've tried my hand at various rim-fires too, and pretty hooked on acquiring a .17 HMR in the future. I enjoy historical rifles, and have picked up and got acquainted with as many firearms as I could (best times have been at Re-enactment shows, where you get a free dry-fire of a No-1 Mk3 SMLE). Shotguns aren't usually one of my tastes, but I'd still be happy to try my hand at bird shots and rifled slugs sometime in the future (if they don't get restricted before I turn 18)

So, I'm still pretty new to the whole thing, but I have collected a lot of info regarding various practices like hand loading, bench-resting, sighting in, powders, barrels, bolts and such so I keep learning as I go.

Also, I'm into the politics and controversy regarding firearms, and have helped out trying to save them from the clasp of Anti-Gunners and Greens, which I know is currently a really big problem here.

Being a junior shooter, I do try to also share info about the sport to my friends, who I know most of them do go either hunting or target shooting (most are hunters, because of the large amounts of rural land)

So, in the meanwhile until the father can acquire the target rifle for his son to keep doing target shooting (and knock a few more bambis out of the woods  ), I'll go here, and contribute as best as I can :D

Thanks for spending the time to read this, Heckler303.....awaaaaaaaaaayyyyy...

Not to be a correction-nazi here but for your information .308 Winchester and 7.62 Nato are actually different cartridge. Similar, but different and there are safety issues interchanging them.

Some reading for you here on the subject - Interchanging .308 win and 7.62x51 NATO

Welcome again ;)

Hi Heckler

The .308 is a great cartridge it spawned the .243w,260 rem and 7mm-08 which can all use .308 cases if you are skilled at reloading, it's hardly big bore compared to what some clowns have here.

Ooooooooooooooooooohh

I heard they were different in some aspects, but didn't really think they had any proper difference aside from one being a sporting brand of the catridge used by military. Thanks for the help, like I said I'll pick up what I learn and head on from there.

I've got a goal to one day try my hand at a .577 or a .600 nitro express, which down in Hobart I'm pretty sure there is a range that holds double rifles of both goodies. Hopefully neither calibre will be in a handgun like what you can find on youtube (how a thompson contender can even hold one of them and not blow up when fired amazes me)

@Bentaz, don't worry, happiness is a warm remington :D

@brett1868, I'll be sure to look out for them when they pop up from the cold!

I'll type slow just in case he's a slow reader, no different then emailing my brother. I'll also type everything twice, once for each head

Thinking he probably has better Taswegian jokes then us...I worked with a blonde girl year ago that had me in stitches with blonde jokes.

Oh launceston! Got any good gun ranges over there? I'd guessing it would be outta town, but still, if there are ever any comps on in the future where juniors can join, I'd gladly meet up for a shoot :D

BTW, whats the best gun store in launnie? I usually just go to Sports Hut for anything.

two tasmanians talking to each other, now it feels more like it should.

I have always thought that, if I were ever to become PM, my first policy would be to gift Tasmania to new Zealand. We could raise the average IQ of both countries in the process.

It really pays to shop around, if you are buying from the mainland, sports hut will do the transfer for $50 which was why I chose them.

For ammunition, look for "Greg Barry" on facebook, he sells in bulk and it's better priced compared to other shops. I have almost completely forgot the existence of LGS because 9/10 times online is cheaper even after postage.

There isn't a range in Launceston per se, I've been just going onto forestry land to shoot, still in the process of locating a spot with a straight cleared bit that stretches for longer than 200m, I would be really happy with just 200m actually.

Hardest part is actually getting onto private property to shoot. Everyone seems to have "enough" shooters and poachers to keep whatever numbers down. Hard to earn trust to warrant being let onto private property when there isn't a chance to prove oneself.

Maybe they can secede and become the country of Tasmania, and get away from Australia's increasingly s**ty laws
