Why are gun shops closed on the weekend?

Post by juststarting » 29 Aug 2015, 2:51 pm

Random thought... Since most people who shoot also work, because shooting costs money and every single Melbourne gunshop closes around 5... I recon the first shop to stay open, say, 10am to 4pm on the weekend (can stay close on Mon and Tue) will double its business over those two days. This old school mentality of working your hours, instead of around your customers' hours really agitates me.

I guess it's a matter of making money or family time?

I run a small business myself and my wife works Mon-Fri full time and for now I'm open Sat (which leaves Sun as the only day to have family time). If I open Sun, I would want to work it myself (less wage cost as I'm paying my staff double) to minimise expenses and to ensure they're not mucking around if I'm paying them that much.

I totally get the family time and I didn't actually know about higher rate on Sunday... But for few bigger shops, Frankston, Clayton, Gun Emporium - I see no issue, since they already have staff and they could be on a rotating roster. Just a random thought, that's all.

Sunbury Firearms are open till 7pm Wed-Fri and open till 2pm Sat.
It would be good to see one open Sunday's as I work 6 days a week and almost the same hours as most gunshops. If you need ammo on a Sunday go to gun range. Eagle park have a fair range of ammo on hand
if you don't get stuck, your not trying hard enough

So people have a day off and all the rest, but...

Fact is we have relatively few gun shops. I'd say there are only 1 or 2, maybe 3 within range of most people.

Not like most retail where everyone has 50 competitors in range and you stay open to compete. Without many other options they know you will make the time to get there when they're open because you don't have much other choice.

There are 6500 gun dealers in the Great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (check ATF website). Our wondrous Cabellas flagship store in Hamburg, Pennsylvania sells more firearms per year than any location in the world.

If you are ever in the area, check it out. Everybody online likes to show their mountain with animals all over it, or their safari museum with African animals. But they have a "deer" museum that goes noticed online, it's the size of a battleship. Hundreds upon hundreds of trophy deer and maybe some other antlered animals (I forget) with descriptions of who, what, when, and where.

They have a flash tour online. It will not give you the feel of walking into one of the largest buildings in the world, but you can see some of the stuff.

Saturdays 8-00am to 4pm
Sundays 8-00am to 2pm

Marlin Model 1895 45-70 Government, Lever
3 shotguns, all 12 Ga, U/O, SKB, FEG (coach) and Fausti
maybe a Boito coach gun, just because I should have a SXS in the safe.

Mansfield is a popular hunting spot in Victoria isn't it?

I had a quick look at Google maps and see it's a few hours from the city, I guess it's worth their while to be open for the weekend hunters/campers.
