Let Them Eat Duck

Started out with 12 ducks at the end of summer. We are now down to 3!

That's 9 ducks lost in about 5 months.

We lost 3 in quick succession to a Wedge Tailed Eagle (or eagles), then the wedgies found the turkeys in the farm over the hill so they left our ducks alone.

Then a quoll took 2 before i could get my hands on a cage trap and fix the possum/quoll proofing in the poultry yard/new orchard. Caught Mr Cranky Quoll and relocated him to a nice spot with mountain views over the river, not coming back in a hurry. All was good....

Until! Last week the Wedgies must have run out of turkeys to eat and came back for the rest of our ducks. All the females are gone and down to 3 that were destined for some delicious chinese cook up. Might have to have that cook up sooner than later!!!

Heading to QLD for some sun and a spot of fishing, so i'll scoot the remaining ducks in with the chooks until i get back from holiday and then have a big duck FEAST!!!

Might have to hold off on more ducks until the fruit trees grow for better cover against death from above!

Or for a more legal option you could try keeping your turkeys and ducks in a run with a cadged top.

Haha... i guess it does sound a little suspicious but the quoll honestly was released into the hills over the river. Wont come back because a river crossing isn't much fun.

Once the fruit trees establish a good canopy, there will be heaps of cover for some new ducks. Until then i'll stick to the chooks, which have a netted run off Hotel Bok Bok.

We really don't mind the wedgies eating a few ducks. It's not like it's impacting our lively hood; just means less Chinese Roast Duck on the menu. I think the wedgies are having a harder time of it than domestic ducks are. Not many breeding pairs in Tas.

That's no good mate, friends of mine had 30 chickens, 18 got killed in one night, they replaced them and a few nights later nearly all of em got killed bloody foxes - I told em I'd come out and sort the prob but would they listen - NO. the chooks cost em $16ea to replace and lasted a few nights anyway they have since rebuilt the chook yard so hopefully that will be the end of the killing spree for a while until ol foxy realises he can go over the top!

The issue would be far easier to sort out if it were foxes to blame!!!

The chooks seem to be quoll proof and have netting over their enclosure. The Ducks just have a shelter in a fenced off 20 x40m. Anyway.... Duck for dinner before the rest of them get taken!!!

Bloody.... Might not be wedgie.... Down to two ducks overnight. Doesn't look like typical quoll kill.... Carcass picked clean. Quolls usually leave a lt behind.

Bloody drop bear got me in the dairy a few months ago. Brush tailed possum jumped on the back of my head while I was cleaning down!

I had a possum friend one time. I would sit outside with night vision and he would walk up to me and start sniffing me and look around trying to see me. I would talk to him and it didn't scare him away. They are very creepy looking but this one was so curious and non-threatening that I liked it when he came around.
