Hunting and firearms permit NSW

Post by Frischling » 18 Sep 2015, 3:37 pm

Hey,
i am pretty new to Australia.
I come from Austria in Europe where i have been a hunter official for the last 7 years but i grew up in a hunter&farmer family and was out with my dad since i can remember . At home i hunted in the Alps, mainly for Roe, Red deer, and chamois but also sometimes wild boar and for sure any type of small game.

now i want to buy a centerfire rifle(.270 or .308) , for hunting here.

After 3 month i will have to leave the country for a short time.(ETA-Visa)
i will be here for 1 year in total.

Is it possible for me to get a permit for big bore rifles because i only have an ETA Visa?

Would be nice if anyone could help me.

cheers

Hey Felix, welcome to Australia,

I think you landed in the wrong state my friend...

Victoria (a little bit further south than NSW :P ) is the hunter's state, with unlimited deer hunting opportunities on ALL public lands (excluding park/reserve/sanctuary) also pig, deer, goat, hare, rabbit, fox, dog and cat!!!

And accordingly ANY chambering of rifle any self respecting European would care to care about :D 5.6mm/6.5/ 7/ 8/ 9.3/9.5/ 10.75 in any Mauser / Brenneke / Mannlicher / Vom Hofe /Schüler chambering even the heretical 375H&H or even those 'merican Win/Rem/Ultra Mags in any size you desire.. is awaiting your chequebook(or credit card)....

So when you come to your senses and venture into Victoria, International visitors can apply for a permit EXEMPTING them from the licensing provisions!! :drinks:

If however you decide to reside in VIC, as a hunter the pathway to firearm ownership is simple.... as long as you can prove your identity and genuine reason.

thanks for the answers.

i think i have to move to victoria.. ;)
i hope it will be possible to go on a hunting farm, to help them with culling female and young deer, i don't need to shoot deer with big antlers, i just wanna hunt for the meat and the experience.
i really wanna experience a pig hunt with dogs, because this is illegal in Austria. We only hunt them by night from a treestand with good scopes...
so i brought my good Schmidt&Bender scope for nothing...:( that sucks..

There are lots of pig-doggers, and hound hunters chasing deer around Vic.....

And for culling deer (we kill them in Australia, no need for the softly language here) you dont need a farm, just the many millions of hectares of open state forest.

Your scope; no waste, mount it on your deer rifle to help with your long range work, you know over 100 to 150m

Yes,

Vic is different to the other states as you can just walk onto state forest (plus selected reserves and National Parks) and hunt.
& no permit required for feral and pest animals.
Game license required for game species of duck, quail and deer.

Victoria sounds nice right now.

What about comparing it with tassie? Seem pretty similar with licenses for wallaby, deer, quail and deer required for hunting. Anything else is take as much as a person can carry over a shoulder :D

Maybe, most state forests allow hunters to take wallaby, feral cat, dog, fox or pest birds, as the people that monitor the forests always like having the populations reduced to keep everything in balance. Sounds pretty nice to me.

Austria....you have Kangaroos there right? It's Austria and not Australia and there's no Kangaroos in Austria....I bought the "No Kangaroo's in Austria" T-Shirt in Vienna airport many years ago. I have some good stories of time spent in Vienna, good beer, tasty sausages and friendly women (Once they know you're Australian and not American). Welcome to Australia and hopefully you can get the hunting experience you're after. Victoria looks to be perfect for your needs, Not so much NSW and definitely avoid Queensland.

Drop on them from a tree with a big knife. Like a drop bear. Or shoot them with a bow.

Do you have a firearms licence from Austria ?

I am not sure about your case, if you were a tourist you could get a hunting permit and even bring bolt action centrefire rifles to Australia if you are participating in a hunting safari or hunting club organised hunt which will accommodate safe storage regulations for you.

Probably best if you contact firearms registry,i don't think you can apply for an overseas permit while you are here, they need your local Police in Austria to fill in a form, you might have to join a hunting club.

You also have to pass a water bird identification test IIRC.

(No test for deer, Frischling)

Different license isn't it?

Hunting is your general one, then there is a hunting with hounds one?

It's been a while since I did the paperwork but I think it was just a matter of ticking the box.

There are a bunch of laws and responsibilities about breeds and what to do and not do, but no test like the bird identification one.

AFAIK.
