With your safety page on the identify your target and check your firing zone I think you should add something about being aware of what's behind your target in case you miss.

I see you have figured out why some ranges ban muzzle brakes, imagine having a 50BMG beside you at an indoor range.

You are progressing well with a decent variety of guns, it's good to have blogs from people new to shooting

I shoot indoors at St Mary's and always try for a bay away from the regular punters when using a braked rifle. I have twice pulled the trigger whilst the guy next to me was admiring his groups, imagine his surprise when the paper target was literally shredded by back blast. The first time was an accident and I immediately apologised and offered to replace the target, the guy was in awe that muzzle blast could rip the target to pieces and refused a replacement though did take up the offer of a few shots so all good.
The second time was on purpose, I got sick of people in the bay next to me pulling the target back after every shot and bragging to their mates about how good they shoot. Look through the scope dumbass, so after pausing several times while they admired the 2" groups they were shooting I deliberately fired and shredded their target.
Point is, manners go both ways. If you happen to be next to a braked rifle at the range don't be pulling your target back every 2 mins to admire it. The angle of the fins on the Cheytac brake are perfect for shredding paper targets on the bays either side of me :)

If you enjoy a face full of dirt then try shooting a .416 Barrett prone out of the back of a station wagon. Gonna take me months to clean the dust out of the interior :(

Good attitude on the guns and kids front, like you I keep my son separate from the firearms. He knows I shoot and he's seen both pistols and 1 rifle I own but remains blissfully clueless along with my missus of the full extent of my armoury. I work on the pretext of plausible deniability, if they don't know then they can't tell. Kids have big mouths so the less they know the better as you don't want them getting into any dick pulling comps at school about how their dad has lots of guns. I have informed my boy (10yr old) that if in the unlikely event that he finds a firearm or cartridge that he immediately inform either myself, the missus or my mate across the road so we can deal with it. Unfortunately or fortunately I have a boy that isn't overly interested in guns at this time so I don't have to worry about him getting up to mischief while my back is turned. If it's not in sight then it's locked up is one rule I live by at home.

Spot on, the same approach here.

Kinder in my case, but that's what I am really trying to avoid, at least for now.

What exactly pissed you off about this? Did it somehow interfere with your shooting or do you just not like people? :)

The dust cloud from the muzzle brake is bigger when on the ground, not sure it would make much difference from the back of a station wagon.

The old military trick was to wet the ground with your water bottle to reduce the size of dust cloud

Marching up and down hills for a week at a time with two days worth of food in the Dry Season and no outside contact. Yeah, I'll keep my water, and I'll apply my urine directly to a heat casualty on a breezy spur. No reason to get all worked up about second hand piss exposure :)

Yep...it's dirty :)
If I'm getting covered in dust and crap being 3 feet off the ground you and imagine the crap flying back if on the ground. The muzzle brake is effective in 2 ways, reducing recoil and throwing crap back in your face. Quite often I'll set up a target to do some sighting in and I drive 100m shoot, 200m shoot and so on up to sometimes 1000m so shooting prone out the back of the wagon saves a heap of time. I'm currently shopping for a cheap 4x4 I can set up for the bush and it will have a purpose built rest in the back for this type of task.

Water is not an option as I have to bring what I need with me as there's no water on the property and I prefer dust in the face to mug in the eye :)

I made the mistake of leaving a towel on the bench in front of my 11.5 inch M16 with PWS comp. More than once, I am afraid. First burst tore a hole in it the size of my head and left it smoldering. And that's only 5.56.

There was someone over here developed a muzzle break that diverts the gases upwards and doesn't have any ports underneath. The idea was to prevent dust and such being blown about but also to counter barrel lift.

Now, I've never used it and haven't even seen it in action, but it's an interesting premise

All my brakes vent to the sides at around 45 deg. The Barrett brake design is very effective compared to the DTA's design though the DTA is much lighter and easier to carry. Both still "kick" but no more then say my 300 Weatherby Magnum which isn't braked.
Brakes that vent only in the up direction are not so much a brake as they are compensators. Ones that vent on several axis like those fitted to the M16 are more so flash eliminators than brakes.
Blankets, tarps under or near the brake when fired tend to be shredded after a few shots. When shooting at St Mary's the .375 Cheytac muzzle blast makes the noise insulation sprayed on the roof rain down like snow there's that much pressure energy there.

When looking at the size of the brakes can we say size does count?

About that vs brakes which only vent to the side, logic suggests braking in 4 directions (top + right + bottom + left) would provide more reduction than braking just to the sides.

Do you know why they don't do the 45 degree brake like that which brakes in 4 directions? Seems like an easy fix for more reduction at a glance.
