10,000 guns!!

Post by Fritz » 29 Oct 2015, 3:38 pm

Holy Crap

WHEN sheriff’s deputies went to serve a subpoena on an alleged drug dealer at his home they discovered up to 10,000 stolen shotguns and hunting rifles.
“We honestly passed guns from one person to the other as fast as you could for nine straight hours,” Chesterfield County Sheriff Jay Brooks told WBTV.
“There were so many guns we quit counting after a while.”

I'm gonna take a guess that 10 000 guns would probably completely fill 4 x 20 ft shipping containers.

Up to... But they stopped counting them. So who are they gonna have count them? And where were they? Surely you'd need a warehouse for that many, i can't see a shipping container being large enough. I'm wondering if there may be some exageration

They have to attempt to find the original owners and return them.

No, they don't destroy a gun because it is stolen. Do they destroy your car if it is stolen? :D

We have a national database of stolen guns in the US. If you have a gun stolen and you report it to police it will go in there. All guns made in the US have had serial numbers since 1969 (unless you make them for personal use) and most guns before that. When a cop recovers guns(s) from a criminal or that are suspected to be stolen he runs the database at a minimum. If it turns up, you get your gun back. Some cops will go a little further to try to find original owner, but that can be tough because we don't have registration of firearms. If they work hard enough they can trace it to the first person that bought it from a gun dealer, but not much after that. So most won't go that far.

Some cities have destroyed guns in the US but they have not been recovered guns reported stolen. More like guns found on/used by criminals and since the criminals can't have them back once convicted they may do that. Or guns turned in to cities during stupid voluntary gun buy backs (AKA "murder evidence amnesty day"). Most municipalities won't destroy guns owned by criminals and not reported stolen, conservative areas will auction them and more left-leaning areas will sell them as a lot to a gun dealer to wash their hands of the evil things.

Legally? No.

Not illegally either ;).

Such a requirement would turn the victim of a crime into a criminal, having done nothing wrong at all, and would violate his Fifth Amendment Rights against testifying against himself.

For instance, there are a few states in the US that require registration of guns. And they have serious penalties for not doing so. The US Supreme Court has ruled that these laws can only put law abiding Citizens in jail, not Criminals. It would be a violation of the Fifth Amendment to require criminals to register guns, since that would be a law requiring self-incrimination.

Having said all that, Aussies are probably hearing "registration registration" based on this subject I profererd. There is no registration of guns in most US States.

That's the case here.

It varies from state to state but we have between "immediately" and 24 hours to report a stolen or lost firearm or we're liable to be charged with an offence.
