##the following is opinion, obtain you own legal advice before acting on the following## standard disclaimer

carry on....
In NSW you could technically transport the firearm over your shoulder......
I'm not aware of a breach of the
firearms law for safely carrying a rifle in public.....Please comment if anyone knows different, particularly the NSW law enforcement community, yes, I can see you there
There will no doubt be 101 other offences of the public order type that theyd try on.....
Although the public carriage would no doubt result in a convoy of special black landcruisers rolling up with special types dismounting off the extended rear bumper bar, either shoot you (sorry, they dont do that in NSW unless the perp commences his/her planned attack..) and locking you away with terrorism charges..... because a lawful firearm licence is synonymous with terrorist activity now (thanks Feds

)
Firearms must be locked up when not IN USE or not being CARRIED.....
If you have your firearm displayed in public or even simply in a public place (could be the boot of the car), the po-po can seize it if they reasonably consider it unsafe if it has a mechanical defect or ANY OTHER reason. Translation - in public = unsafe. Firearms are considered inherently dangerous, 'dangerous goods' example is transport on Vic public transport, the policy is no firearms as they are classed as 'dangerous goods', yep, a load of crap as under the applicable transport classification the are not in the category, it is simply the antis in the authority who under their discretion - placed firearms on the list.
Ammunition must be stored in an approved receptacle, there is probably overlap with the stated DG regs, as explosives are covered elsewhere than the firearms law....
