GCA - explain this: Man carrying fully auto sub-machine gun

Post by southeast varmiter » 19 Nov 2015, 8:42 am

A man has been caught with a sub-machinegun in his bag outside a major shopping centre in Sydney's inner west, police say.

As shoppers were heading to Marrickville Metro shopping centre at lunchtime on Wednesday, the man had travelled to the area by taxi with a Thompson-brand fully automatic sub-machine gun, a clip and 15 shotgun shells.

The 41-year-old man met officers involved in a police operation from the State Crime Command's Firearms Squad and Tactical Operations Unit on Murray Street.

Police searched his bag and found the weapon and ammunition.

The Thompson sub-machinegun, nicknamed the "Tommy gun", was most commonly associated with New York gangsters in the early 20th century and was used extensively in World War II.

"That's a pretty serious weapon," a police spokesman said. "It's not one that often turns up."

Police from Newtown Local Area Command arrested the man without incident and he was taken to Newtown police station.

He was charged with possessing an unregistered and prohibited firearm, acquiring a firearm without a licence or permit and possessing ammunition without holding a licence.

He was also charged in relation to outstanding warrants.

Bail was refused.

He is due to appear in Newtown Local Court on Thursday.

You can buy these legally in NSW on a collectors license and only needs to be rendered temporally inoperable by way of a trigger lock. The one shown in the link looks legit and not a reproduction so good work by the cops getting it off the streets. I'm sure once it's traced the original owner is in for a grilling unless it was smuggled in illegally.

No, cant be right, they were all handed in, during the very successful buy back??!!

GCA will explain it by blaming a licensed owner, who didnt surrender it back during year Zero (1996)... [shades of] 'gray' market here....

But this one looks in mighty fine condition especially the wood for a full Auto early model 80+ year old firearm(top charger / finned barrel) I'd be betting its a SEMI Auto current production, but they wont state either way, because that would be the difference between blaming 'us' back in 96 OR conceding that it came into the country possible through less than legitimate means!!

The language of the presstitutes just never fails to impress with the lack of firearm knowledge and sheer crapology; It had a 'clip' of course, shotgun shells (that makes sense with a tommy gun, and association with New York 'gangsters in the early 20th century, if you get all your learnings from Hollywood..... Dont worry about it being generally available to anyone on the open market back in the day....

He throws in the reference to the shoppers close by going about their business, while very carefully wording what sounds like a set-up sting:

"The 41-year-old man met officers involved in a police operation"

So the police 'invited' a guy with what is described as a sub-machine gun to a place frequented by many members of the public???

I wondered about that.

You can never really know what's what with how much the media get their terms wrong but if you take it as it's written he had the SMG, an empty magazine, and shotgun shells.....Which all ads up to nothing that you can fire together and no danger.

I should have quoted Austrac's comment about where can you get one from. Everything is prohibited if you don't have the right permits, hence the charges.

Betting that it can to Australia via the container route its easy as to do so i'm told.
Had a mate 20 years ago worked for customs he explained it to me like this and sorta makes some sense container is loaded with what ever in port X put on ship as car parts sent to sydney say in them days customs only opened at end point "fred nerks garage not on docks "ok so container sitting on the dock in no7 darling harbour Sydney says its blue , truck driver comes to dock gate with blue container on the back after hes gone real slow down to gate to get a load of traffic behind him says he new is this number 7 glebe island get mouth full of abuse from gate keeper asks if he can just swing inside and get rid of traffic ok swing round there in side fork truck lift,s of box that's already unpinned dropps another on driver go on way says sorry to gate keeper had to find toilet all happy ( all the money was transfered a lot before they all know whats gong on but don't say more than what happened ) if you rember a couple of years ago a hell of a lot of illegal clocks were floating round not the ones the coppers armourer were selling bet that's how they got in

Purely speculation,but:

It sounds like a sting and Police knew he was going to be there, hence it being in such a public place. That leads me to two thoughts,

1) they got a tip off that he would be there
2) perhaps he was trying to sell it, not realising that his buyer was actually an undercover cop.

The terminology used (meeting officers rather than being intercepted) suggest it was number two for me...

A sting. yes.

I can imagine how it went;

Cops: "Is that Mak (Not his real name, he's smart enough not to use his real name)"
Mak:"Maybeeeee, it that sweetcheeks69?"
Cops "Yes. You're busted, We're cops"
Mak "So, do I still get the money?"

They are not easy to buy in the USA, the registry has been closed for full auto since the 80's

I doubt this would have been converted from a disabled collectors gun, I would say illegal import.

You can transfer ANY grandfathered Auto, they are $$$ though,

Thompsons 'SMG''s are produced in semi-auto, cost is around just over a ground? maybe a bit more.... but why would you buy a semi 45Auto (other chamberings too) when you could buy a semi 308win for less!!

Given that the container inspection rate is at 3% (so we're told)
I would suggest there is nothing in this world.... that you cant find locally....for the right $

It's a one page form, front and back, sign a piece of paper saying you are a US Citizen, enclose a $200 check and mail it off. 10 minutes at the seller's house then straight to the post office.

If you go the LEO signature route, add fingerprints and a passport photo, and drop in the mailbox on your way out of the Sheriff's office after picking up your sidearm from the security locker.

I saw an advertised full auto for $17,000 USD, the semi autos are more common around $1200 in the USA.

The article I saw had the police saying he was trying to sell it,i wonder how much he was asking.

The media can never be trusted 100%, I reckon this might be a semi auto they are talking up Hollywood style into a full auto for the fear factor, that shouldn't stop us talking up the failures in keeping these full autos out.

Of course it will be destroyed... just like the Colt AR15 SP1 that was handed-in in VIC after change in firearm laws 88(?) by a collector...

To turn up at Port Arthur..... but lets not go there, into the realm of the inconvenient.

They do it all the time here. Every gun ever found by police, even if legally owned, is called something "scarier" than what it is. A funny one I saw about a year ago was the POLICE told the media they had captured a silenced submachinegun. They made a mistake of giving the press a pic, it's a .22. Yeah., it looks somewhat like and MP-5, but the cops were just playing political games.

every report EVER involving ANY firearm will invariably refer to HIGH POWERED RIFLE even if its a decades old airgun..... with the Adlergate, it was referred to as a very high powered shotgun/firearm/rifle/gun.... then I recall it was David Shatbrik who reach a new level of crapology by going the VERY VERY high powered.......

There were some airsoft guns the media called a frightening arsenal fairly recently.

If it is a genuine full auto perhaps the government would be better off selling it to a gun dealer in the USA instead of destroying it/passing it on to crims, I saw one advertised for $17,000 USD.

It would be criminal of the government to destroy something they could get $15K for.

You see I'm planning on buying a Automatic Machine Gun with Very Very High Powered Rounds for my daughter as a Christmas present.
