The dings, scratches and drops

Post by AusTac » 23 Nov 2015, 1:05 pm

Hey fellas,

So last night i was showing a buddy of mine my 'new' 303 sporter which is all beaten up and war scared, all cool, he then looked inside my safe and saw my new toy the beretta 12 guage 686 sp1, he then attempted to remove it from the safe and dinged it on the bottom lip, i heard the tap and my heart sank, but it is what it is, so to make me feel a little better i want to hear some horror stories if anyone is willing to share. :problem:

Not mine but a shooting buddy. Rifle bag taken out of boot and placed on ground. Driver decides to reverse 4wd and turns it into a V.

I decided to put matt Estapol on the checkering of a new rifle to stop the entry of rain and humidity. Masked off the checkering with sticky tape to keep the Estapol getting on the stock finish. Pulled off the tape a week later and the stock finish came with it

sorry, cant trump those stories.... (<with you not at you...honest)

But if it makes you feel any better, the dings, scratches and worn finish add character, and memories... I see an immaculate firearm one that spent too much time IN the safe, and not outside getting appreciated...

One of my shotties was my fathers old hunting Beretta, each time I take it out I think of him using it and all the smallish furry feathered friends he shot with it.... maybe your next generation will see it the same

If its a dent and the grain hasn't been damaged too much get a damp T-towel and an Iron and swell the dent back out ( I did a similar thing to my SP1 and it was sorted very quickly and easily by using the method mentioned (I've used it a few times now to get dents out of stocks and it works brilliantly.

I have heard about this but have always been a little hesitant to try it, so literally damp tea towel over the spot, hot iron give it a quick go over and pull it off and check? Repeat as nesessarry?

Hows the finish hold up after a hot iron?

Yep that's it mate (Just use the tip area of the iron and a damp tea towel) give it say 5 seconds on check it and repeat if necessary then just give it some oil to re oil it (I just use whatever I have lying around at the time and you wouldn't even know I'd done it.

If the grain is cut it won't work as well but if the grain is crushed as such it should work fine, just give it a go and I think you'll be very surprised how quick and easy it is to swell dents out.

I've done it on Laminated stocks as well and it works fine there too.
