Muzzle brake quieter downrange?

Hi all,

So a muzzle brake makes the report louder to the shooter and those around him because some of the blast is directed sidewards/backwards towards them.

Does it follow then that a shot from a muzzle brake is quieter if you're on front of it?

If you're 100m away or however far out of the local 'blast zone' around the rifle it should be quieter, right?

I'm sure it would, as you say a portion of the gasses are directed elsewhere therefore a portion of the noise must also be directed elsewhere.

Whether it would make a practical, or even perceivable difference from in front of the rifle I couldn't say. Obviously there is still plenty of business coming forward regardless of a brake.

Some of the muzzle blast related sound perhaps, but sound of bullet in flight and the sonic crack won't be altered at all.

Game would certainly still scatter from the sound of the shot if that's where you're headed.
