Saw a girl on the news the other night admitting that she carries a sharpened pencil for self defense everywhere she goes now.

Normal people aren't ignorant that dangers have been increasing in our society. Streets that could once be walked after dark are becoming more unsafe, and even attacks against women in the middle of the day at parks, etc.

What would be better - a girl with a sharpen pencil - potentially lethal but also a greater risk that it could be used back on her, or allow them to use mace / tazers.

There really needs to be a greater outcry for the ability for the community to defend themselves.

I'd like a taser, but would someone please tell me what exactly mace is?

Mace is a chemical spray designed to temporarily blind and cause pain.

really easy to make though (don't do it). only real problem is finding something to propel it proper (don't try it). last thing you need is it coming back at you by mistake lmao (I dare yah) but for legal reasons anything I say in this post is purely for educational reasons.

A sharpened pencil ??? or a pointy stick ....how about a bannana or a bunch of grapes Mr. Apricot?
If you get the reference, thats how serious this "defend yourself" is without also accepting a persons right to use firearms as a form of self defence.

I'm not so convinced on knives.

Pulling a trigger at a distance is much less visceral than being up close and personal.

I would say most people (on the victim side) would be reluctant really have a go with a knife, whereas if the attacker got the knife off them due to their hesitation would more likely have no qualms about using it to full effect.

:unknown: I have put myself in that situation while thinking about different stuff to do with CC. Personally, I hope that even if we were able to conceal carry anything, I'd much rather have no situation where I'd be forced to use it than have to put down someone on the spot.

But if it really did come to that, I would most likely find no remorse in doing so. To me, my life is important, and the only one that's responsible for it. If someone is really going to be that intent on taking it away for such a petty reason (wanting valuables, 'gettin a kick out of it, rivalry, e.t.c) that really pisses me off.

Knives aren't isolated with that. Any weapon that a victim has is likely to be used against them if the attacker can get that weapon off them. Gun, knife, taser, scissors, etc.

It's my opinion that no weapon should be presented unless that person is prepared to use it. True that many attackers may be deterred by the presence of such a weapon, however it's a gamble. With so many minds ruined by drugs - an attacker is just as likely to attack as to run these days, and if you're not prepared to use that weapon, you've just given an added opportunity to the assailant.

You should really try to keep the element of surprise and use whatever you have on them before they have time to react. That's how you do it.

I think it depends on the situation. I'd much prefer to pull a weapon that gives them an opportunity to back off and stop, but use it if I had absolutely no choice, rather than to just take a life straight up for the sake of surprise. But with the very limit options we have here in Australia (because we aren't allowed to use weapons for self defense) - I agree with you - sadly... surprise is one of very few options available to us.
