Today I went to purchase a pair of Leupold 1" see thru rings. ( Rings ONLY )

I was confronted with a pop up that said they were a "restricted item" and if I wanted to go ahead with the purchase, I would have to get a USA License/Permit to get them exported.

As if paying the equivalent of the purchase price for postage to the US postal service as well isn't enough BS



Which brings me to another whinge,,,,,,,,,,

At the rate Aussie Post is going, where will we be if it ends up down the gurgler ???

Yeah. It's ITAR. It comes up by default on all export items that are barred for exit from the US without permit. Most distributors here have them in place. I know that with some products like rings it shouldn't be a problem. But not things like night sights / thermal etc.

Rings should still be classed as an accessory and exempt from ITAR charges. Do you have a U.S based drop box? Auspost have them but I use my brother in law

I want to look into this but it can be tedious as there is statute, regulation, and guidance. So I just want to check a few sources first, from you guys and then from my guys, to see if I can skip the nonsense.

I reckon more likely just because it's in the 'firearms' section of the website the popup is showing, or something like that.

They could send them though no problems (AFAIK).

Yeah Mate, the Ebay username of the advert for the rings is > apaaccessories, and the item location listed is Glendale Arizona.
The ad does say "posts worldwide", so I have no idea why the ITAR pop up box got involved.

I have asked via ebay message if they can or cant post to Australia,,, but have had no reply thus far.

What I'm after is nothing extra special, ( or sinister (for the benefit of USA's "CIA")

All I want is a pair of Leupold Hi Profile See Thru rings to suit a 1" scope tube, that I will mount on a Weaver or Picatinny rail.

This ITAR mob must think I want something stupid,,,,,, like blueprints of a hydrogen bomb for Godsake.

I would expect there are dozens of quality options for 1" high mount see through rings at the links I provided. I was just looking for rings at those sites a few months ago and the options were limitless.

Also odd I can't find them except on the Leupold site and Ebay. Makes me think they have been discontinued. For $19 rings, there was probably a reason for that.

Methinks I'll go down a different path and modify the steel ones that I already have.
(they have an inferior design crossbolt that tends to snap / shear off at the necked down part of the thread)
Simply replacing those bolts with grade 8,, and chamfering the heads in the lathe should get me home.

I wondered what it was doing, so I got a rifle to get a closer look using the scope,,,,
and some guy jumped out and started talking to his wrist.

Well the jobs done.

I modified the steel rings I had lying around.

Lathed up 2 Hi Tensile bolts to replace the shonky ones.
These rings are much lower than what was on it, and the scope now sits nicely with 2.5 mm clearance btween the bell housing and the barrel.
Had to widen the cross slots in the rail slightly to accommodate the bolt diameters.

Just need to sight it in now

Also on this subject, I forgot to mention that just prior to going to work on these rings, I happened to ring an Australian Gun Shop and enquired about a set of rings similar to the ones that I was thinking about buying from USA via Ebay.

The gunshop came up with a set they had in store that just happened to be identical to the ebay ones.
