QLD - Newbie in need of guidance

Post by paddy4444 » 25 Jan 2016, 12:54 pm

Hey Lads. You wouldn't have seen me because I'm new to the forums, but lately I have been wondering for a while about applying for a gun license and how I should go about doing it. I have just recently turned 17 and currently live in Brisbane and I am planning on obtaining CAT A & B + H (Magnum). One thing I was wondering is if I should try to obtain a minor's license now instead of waiting till I turn 18. Would that be easier than just waiting till I turn 18? Also should I/am I allowed to apply for all those licenses at one time. Or would it better if I did them one by one.

Also I am curious about the "magnum" (over .38) license. I prefer to obtain a magnum license because I would like to option to get a chance for some really hot rounds later own and also whats the point of owning half a license. Never got it either because somehow the government figures that a high powered low capacity handgun is more dangerous than an intermediate mid capacity handgun, but I will leave politics for today :). But is it much harder to obtain a magnum license Cat H than a regular Cat H.

Finally a little more of a bio about me. I think it would best to explain my understanding of small arms so you don't think I just got the idea to apply out of call of duty or something :P. I have had not all that much first hand but luckily enough I have had some experience with F88S, retired SLRS and also a junky Pakistani AKM at cadets. But I consider myself having a fair amount of knowledge regarding both civil and military weaponry as I have been reading books and articles regarding firearms since I was 13. One last thing that might be interesting and helpful, is that I have quite a large police family although most of them aren't actually interested in firearms personally, but I thought maybe they could be of help?

Hoping on getting :P

SP01 (9MM)

SW686 (.357)

Mosin M91/30

Well anyway that's it from me, hope I didn't come off to poorly.

Thanks!

Best advice if you're interested in firearms is to move to NSW or if hunting is more your thing you can't beat Victoria. QLD has probably the 2nd most retarded firearms laws in Aus (debatable if QLD or W.A is the more retarded).

Otherwise welcome aboard and hopefully one of the QLD gents can guide you in the right direction.

Hehe... Become a Mexican...

Good luck, buddy. Best idea is to go along to a range and chat to some club people re: licencing.

I would say you are best to apply for all your licence categories at one time. It should save time and money that way. You will need to join a club for handguns. You may be able to get an exemption so that you can shoot under supervision of a designated club; just so you can start the ball rolling and get to know some firearms and club protocols. You will need to chat to your local club Sec/Pres/Capt, though.

Have fun and stay safe.

I'd say you're best waiting yuntil you're 18. The junior license doesn't give you much, you can't own anything on it.

Join up to SSAA or shooters Union for your genuine reason and get along to the range and join the pistol club. There will be a background check requirement before you join the club since you don't already have a license. You need to be a member for 6 months and get 4 shoots in before you can apply for your H license.

Once you turn 18, do your safety course and apply for your a/b using club as your reason. Your 6 months will be up so you'd also be able to apply for H at the same time.

At that point you can apply for PTAs for your rifles to get the 28 days ticking away for bothe the license and PTAs T the same time. Handgun you'll be allowed maximum of one air plus one other for the first twelve months. Get yourself a 22 and learn with cheap ammo.

Surely you're not calling QLDers retards?  :sarcasm: Our laws are reasonable unless you need to own something bigger than 30cal.

Good onya youngfella, I might suggest visiting Belmont and meet up with some of the juniors there, see what disciplines you may want to have a go at and just generally have a yarn to a few people there that can steer you in the right direction

I think I might just wait till my 18th. I will dodge that .22s though it is cheaper but I prefer something that I would be interested in keeping for a while and that I could use when I really want to put some lead out there. So I feel a .375 would suit nicely as I can practice with .38 special thats fairly cheap and then move on to more pricey and powerful 357 rounds later on. Thanks for the dude!

Queensland laws are without a doubt painful. It took me 5 months to get my A&B license. It seems my application got lost in the system because once I called it was approved in a few hours. Still took another 2 weeks to get the license though.

If you want to get in to pistol shooting I suggest getting your A&B license first. This makes applying to join a pistol club easier as you still go through the same checks when you apply for a Statement of Eligibility. As some of the other people have mentioned go along to a few clubs and talk to the people there.

The way I did it was to join SSAA and did a safety course. I did mine through Asset Training Australia (they're at North Lakes) instead of SSAA because it was cheaper and did their A,B & H safety course all rolled in to one. It took a day to do but at least this way I got all 3 in one go and its cheaper than doing your rifle and handgun courses separately. Your safety course is valid for 12mths from date of issue so you still have the time to do the 6mth waiting period for your H license.

Most pistol clubs when you first start out will only let you shoot .22's. Some have different rules though but most when I did my research only let you shoot .22's until you get your license. You're then by law only allowed to own 1 handgun up to 9mm and 1 air pistol for the first 12 months. After that you can then apply to get your magnum but you need to be part of a specific decision of your pistol club to show a 'genuine reason'.

Anyway bud hope that helps and welcome to the sport.

Is it really a contest?
Qld wins the first leg (initial licensing, though with WA's property size requirements such as needing 2000acres to justify many calibers to them, WA isn't far behind).
From there on in, WA is a clear winner (needing new property letters for EVERY additional firearm, $180 to add an additional firearm to your existing license, the need to own the firearm before you can apply for the license, needing servicability certificates to show your brand spanking new rifle is safe and in good operating condition, not being able to share safes, having to show both plastic and paper licenses simultaneously etc.

Oh, and we don't recognise interstate licenses. Wanna come shoot some camels and donkeys? Apply for a permit to bring your rifles into the state. No guarantees it'll be approved, though

Ok so, I mostly agree with TheDude, except I recommend you get your minor licence as it will help nut out anything which may delay your full licence application.

You need to get a .22 - period. You can't just jump into the .357 and 9mm or we will all have a lot of fun (and a bit of concern) watching you at the range. And the difference in ammunition is massive - and although we all want to jump straight in and shoot .45Magnum and .338 from the start, it's not a good idea for many reasons I'm too tired to explain right now lol.

Also in Qld, you're not getting your .357 & 9mm in your first year so start thinking what you want first. Legally you're limited to one centre fire in your first year.

On the point of a "magnum licence" - there's not really such a thing in Qld - you just get the one concealable licence. If you want to shoot over .38 you need a club approval letter saying you are competing in target or silhouette over .38 - then you get PCS or PCM as a condition on your licence. Not particularly much harder - just an extra step.

You can't apply for all three at once (assuming you want to apply for your A/B on your birthday... Get your A and B first then use that to join a pistol club and after 6 months membership and your required shoots you can apply for your concealable.

Hope that helps
