Apply for A/B it's the same safety course and it covers you for when you want a different type of gun.
$13 from Bacchus marsh council for permit hunt on crown land. Just ring them, it's takes only a minute
And it's worth joining SSAA for the liability and also it's only $20 to shoot at eagle park for members so after a few shoots it pays for itself
if you don't get stuck, your not trying hard enough

To be fair, that article also goes well out of it's way to avoid pointing out that the second largest source of illicit firearms are those that it is not possible to ascertain their source; ie: they have not been legally imported, sold or registered in Australia at any time. Those with a balanced view of these facts will concede that, ipso facto, these firearms recovered by law enforcment with no record of importation or sale in Australia are most probably here as a result of illegal import. :silent:

The article also goes out of it's way to avoid pointing out that the only firearms listed in the report as being a result of illegal imports are those that have been seized as such, there by inferring an assumption that all illegal imports into Australia are found and seized: an inference that is somewhat irrational and ridiculous. :problem: :unknown:

Submissions for the Senate Inquiry into Illicit Firearms are available as a matter of public record and make some interesting reading. Rather than looking at interpretations by ABC "fact checkers", check facts by going to the source documents; in this instance the submissions to the inquiry by law enforcement agencies. :geek: :ugeek: :geek:

On the whole though, Juststarting, i do agree that supporting a 'free for all' policy on firearms will do nothing to win public favour or support for the continued and improved freedoms to legally and responsibly own firearms in this country.

.........ah........yeah.....righto.

Just read through everything, didn't mean to start a world war in the thread.

I understand the vast majority of gun owners are responsible and safe, and my apologies to anyone who's been offended.

This being said, it's the same with everything (eg. cars, alcohol, etc) - there's always some idiot who spoils it for everyone else that's doing the right thing.

Back to the licensing.

When I filled in my form. I only ticked target shooting. I didn't tick hunting. Does this mean it will show up on my licence that I can only participate in target shooting but not hunting? How can I fix this? I surly want to go hunting too.

This is why you should tick all the boxes when you apply.....

'Sport' or 'target' endorsement allows hunting on private land (with permission, any lawful species) and also public land but only pest species...
'Hunting' allows any hunting...........

If you've used a SSAA membership for the target shooting evidence, just email LRD that you'd like hunting added too. It will cost the new card fee to add Hunting, maybe 20 or $30...

Even when ticking just hunting, because "hunters dont target shoot" it means those hunters cant plink on private property.... (In vic you can target shoot on ANY private land, with certain conditions!)

The system is overly complicated..... I thoroughly believe there should be one type of licence.... A firearm licence. End of story. You can then shoot any lawful firearm involving any lawful activity. Just silly talk I guess.

Thank you <<Genesis93>>.

When I filled out the form, I was understand the impression that I needed a reason to obtain my licence. Since I had SSAA membership already, I didn't want to bother to get a permit to hunt from DEPI. I thought the firearm licence allows me to own, process and handle firearms. Little did I know I needed to state all purposes.

Driver licence states what type of motor vehicle the holder may drivers, much like the CAT ABCDEH on firearms licence. However, driver licence doesn't state the purpose of driving the motor vehicle, such as supermarket run, travel to work, go camping, go hunting with firearms inside the vehicle etc etc.

You know what I mean.

FFS..........

you need ZERO permit to hunt on public land in VIC...other than a game licence (for which you DONT need a longarm lic.!!!)

The BS registration of interest was invented solely for the BS longarm licence..........

I hate our BS system, unnecessarily (necessarily??!!) confusing for most punters.

Ok..... now I'm confused after reading on.

Am I able to use just the DSE permit to get my CAT A&B licence?

i.e. In part 8 genuine reasons on the application form only tick hunting and include a copy of the "permit to hunt vermin on crown land"?

If you think that's bad I was about to do a post on barrel break ins.

On the topic of cleaning I do need some help as I need to start building a kit.

From watching youtube and reading forum posts would this be ok?

Dewey cleaning rod (one piece plastic coated) - where do I purchase these in Melbourne? Do they come with the jag for the patches?

Nylon brush - supposedly less wear than a copper brush

Bore guide - about $40 everywhere.

Hoppes 9 - available most gun stores

    Oil - which one?

    Cotton Patches - from ebay.

An old kiddie toothbrush for the chamber

Some brake cleaner for the bolt

    Shooters choice grease

Sound ok? Advice recommendations etc...

Jdewey or tetra rods and brushes, any gun store, Clayton has them with jags. Usually you'd need to get a jag separately.

Brushes, nylon for copper solvent, bronze for carbon solvent.

Oil, I have Hoppes, but there are lots. Also spray lubricant/corrosion protection Lynox or something - from bunnings.

This bloke only uses nylon.... Is there any advantage to using copper?

I know that prior to first use the gun will need a thorough clean, followed by a thorough clean after each of the first ten shots, followed by 3 groups of 3 and 2 groups of 5 to break in.

What does regular cleaning involve after a shoot after the break in is done? i.e. Is a complete solvent clean recommended after each use? (Surely not good for barrel durability?)

At what point are bore snakes used?

Ok so to clarify everything in a single reply for you.

1) To get your license you need a genuine reason. "target shooting" is sufficient reason, as it "hunting". You will need provide supporting evidence for your reason.

2) The SSAA run approved ranges and are a recognised hunting club. If you are a member of the SSAA your membership is supporting evidence for both reasons.

3) As Genesis covered, the DSE document is not a permit of any kind and does not entitle you to do anything in particular. It is simply registering your intent to hunt pests on crown land with the government.

One you have registered that intent, the provided document is supporting evidence that you want a firearm for the purposes of hunting.

4) Once you have your license, that entitles you to hunt declared pests in any forest or on any property where it is legal to do so. This includes cats, rabbits, foxes, feral, dogs, pigs and goats.

5) If you want to hunt deer in either the forest or on private properly. you will need a 'game license'. This is a separate application to your firearms license.

Cheers Vichunter.

I'll be going down to Little River occasionally but I'll be using the registration of interest to hunt vermin on crown land to obtain the licence.

Note that recently most deer species were 'unprotected' on private land were they are causing damage (fences, pastures etc).... so the land owner or AGENT (employee or YOU if you have written authority from landowner!)

May take any deer (except Hog? few other exotics which you will most likely not find)
WITHOUT game licence
WITH spotlights

Please confirm this for yourselves, I may be making it up  :D
(Don't let the NSWelshmen or bananabenders know how good we got it in VIC  )

Had the safety course tonight, all good.

Spoke to the DFO, he said the registration of interest to hunt vermin on crown land is fine to get a licence.

I'm just looking over my paperwork now though....

I have a photocopy of my drivers licence and a photocopy of my birth certificate both witnessed and signed.

Both photocopies are good quality but are black and white and I have only done the front of both. Is this ok, or do they need colour and front and back of both?
