Thanks for the warm welcomes. I have a few pistols, STI 9mms, Hammerli 22, and 2 44 mag revolvers, super blackhawk and a 629. Also a few 357 revolvers. A Browning B92 in 44 and a Marlin 444. Between ISSF, Metallic Silhouette and cowboy lever I'm pretty busy at the club, but I find a few weekends to get away tho and search for deer poo.

Just joined the forum after reading some of the helpful threads and information on here. I am from Melbourne and recently got my gun licence . So a few questions I have :

What is the best (less restrictive) gun range to go to in Victoria?

Is it worth joining a club and also the SSAA?

Is it legal to use a firearm for hunting in national parks and/or state forests if so where do you go?

You don't have to join the SSAA, but it's cheaper for their ranges if you do.

$30 for non members and $15 for members.

If you only go to the range once or twice a year you wouldn't bother, but if you go more than 5-6 times a year it pays for itself with the discount.

What calibre are you shooting?

The Little River shooting range is the 'go to' range in Melbourne there where you can shoot anywhere out to 500m with centrefire calibres. No other ranges with that distance near Melbourne itself I'm pretty sure. Unless you're out in the country, there might be some?

If you're just shooting 22LR there are indoor ranges scattered around the place.

Springvale is the main VIC one I think if that's near you?

Ranges are a bit "all or nothing" here.

The indoor ranges or ranges in the burbs are pretty much all just 22lr and 50m ranges for rifles. Then at SSAA Little River you can shoot anything your like up to 500m. There isn't anything in between.

Yes, you can shoot in state forests.

For the most part, you can't shoot in national parks. You can go Sambar hunting in some national parks but only during season.

There are lots of areas you can't shoot like water catchment areas, and nature reserves. It's important to get it right - If a range catches you shooting in the wrong area you can wave goodbye to your license.

I purchased my first rifle which was just a .177 but currently in the 28 day waiting period for that. My first actual rifle will be a 22lr before I purchase a 308 at the end of the year.

Little river seems the go I guess

I hear a lot about ssaa insurance but under what circumstances can you make a claim?

I haven't looked too much into it but the insurance attached to your membership to the SSAA is meant to cover you for up to $20 million in case you shoot something like a prize horse or cattle while out hunting

Welcome to the forum.

If you want a better understanding of the liability insurance I'd call the SSAA insurance brokers and get them to send you a PDS on their insurance. Or email them and get them to send you it.
