Still did the job three years ago, still got 215 grain MK6 projectiles stashed away for next time.

Yep, one of the magnums is a safer bet but if your balls are big enough it isn't an issue. A bigger calibre is no substitute for experience, there is no magic fix all.

No doubt that .303 will do the job so shall a .308 a similar size case capable of more velocity than the .303 But I'd rather be safe than be chased by 1 tonne Buff.

Hey guys long time lurker here and new member.

Hunting as a boy with dad up the top end and accross the NT, I watched my father and his mates all use 303 and 6.5x55 to smash camel/buffalo/donkeys/monster pigs and scub bulls.

They used alot of Old millitary ammo in the 303 and the norma/sako stuff in 6.5 and I remember dads old m96 carl gustav with irons with 156gr dropping em like thors hammer.

Guess it was more about high sd's and a gun you can climb through the scrub with...

.338 Win Mag with minimum 250 Grn projectiles will do the job easily,I have shot more than a few with mine. Bigger calibers don't make up for poor bullet placement. The old 45/70 with 405 Grn hard cast bullets is also a good stopper. Plenty of pro pet meat shooters use a .308. Tom Cole used a.303, he shot a lot more than most people.
Range is usually fairly short, I carry a set of shooting sticks as the vegetation is usually too tall for a sitting or kneeling shot.

The 45/70 can be real good if you hand load or buy premium rounds most 45/70 rounds are loaded light we have lots of old guns loaded for the 45/70 that should not be shot with modern rounds.
I have a friend who hunts with it and has hunted Africa with it I didn't think much of it till then.

Most of the 45/70 loads are actually 45/65/405, .45 diameter bullet with 65 grains black powder and the bullet weighing 405 grains, duplicate loads that were used for the calvary, same case as the infantry's 45/70/500, 45 cal bullet with 70 grains of powder and a 500 grain bullet, which were chambered in the much weaker trapdoor designed rifles. Trapdoors are the weakest of the actions followed by rolling blocks and the lever action guns which are faily stout and then there are the bank vault strong falling blocks such as Sharps and Winchesters.
