The head of Gun Control Australia, Sam Lee, condemned the change of application form as a "gift to shooters".
I am at a loss to understand why anyone in the mainstream shooting sports would require sound reduction devices of ANY description.
I understand that they may be required in very limited circumstances on that basis they can be applied for on an as needs basis only
Availability to the wider sporting shooting community is in my opinion ill considered at best.
The carping from the Gun Control Coalition and the head of the organisation (All of 2 people in 2012) Miss Lee is irrelevant as they have no legal moral or statistical basis other than personal opinion for their outpouring or ill founded misinformations.
They are certainly entitled to their individual opinions but not to represent them as something they are not i.e A coalition ( by inference many) opposed to all matters related to firearms ownership possession and use.
Before get flogged metaphorically speaking for my views on Sound moderators It should be known I own a good collection of firearms from .22 to .338 Lapua Magnum and a .460 Steyr I have done so for decades so have no issue with guns I just DO NOT get Sound Moderation devices for the average shooter.
Limited use on permit only is what I see as their best case scenario.

I'll call the DTA importer next week and get some idea if he can import them and what it's likely to cost. Will be great to lose the muffs out hunting, more comfortable and safer without them I think.

But they are gaining so much popularity that there is a strong push to get them off the Class 3 list. Reasons being are they are beneficial to hearing safety and protection and since more states are allowing them to be used when hunting they, they are less disturbing to non-hunters in the area.
bigfellascott wrote:Here's a vid for you guys who think that putting a silencer on your firearm is going to make it super quiet, it ain't, it just reduces the Crack/Boom type effect but it is still very auditable as you can see. The 22's are quite quiet but you need to run sub ammo in those to get that effect or else they are still loudish.

bigfellascott wrote:You can disagree all you like mate, most will be using their standard hunting rounds and the noise reduction isn't silent as such, just drops the crack/boom down is all, sub sonic ammo is always going to be quieter than standard ammo, that's a no brainer really.
Perhaps you'd be good enough to put some vids up of your setups in action mate so we can all hear the diff.
Chronos wrote:Guys be aware nothing has changed legislation wise, only changes to the fields on the application form.
As someone said elsehete they are not even processing/approving applications for pro shooters let alone sporting shooters. Don't get your hopes up.
As for importing them an Australian manufacturer has said there is no provision in the customs act to import supressors for anything other than go to contract shooters so you won't be able to import one from either the IS or the states. It will have to be manufactured here by a smith with a prohibited weapons permit and the price range he mentioned was "as much as another rifle"

Question: How does one of these cans on your barrel affect the harmonics? I'd prefer one loud bang to a lot of slightly lower ones if it affects accuracy.

Anybody want to post my vids on yute tub or vimeo for our friends here?
