Must you have a safe before applying for gun license

Post by Banza29 » 30 Mar 2016, 4:52 pm

Hi all

I am currently in the process of applying for my qld A & B gun license. I was told by a few people that I must have a gun safe before applying for my license , but I called up the weapons processing branch and they told me that I did not have to. I only needed one when I wanted to purchase a gun. Just wanted to clarify with you guys , and yes I know I will have to get one eventually but I just wanted to know.

Thanks

Short answer is no.
A safe is only required If you purchase a firearm

The smart thing is to have your "Safe Storage" in place before you buy firearms.

I (NSW) applied for a Category A,B & C Licence first up. I asked the local Firearms Licencing Sargent to come and do an inspecton. Which he did and gave me a lot of confidnence in that my storage was actually way more than expected.

You can probably do either but it's nice to know they are happy before you even own a firearm.

Nope but as has been said, if you plan to acquire a firearm make sure you get your s**t sorted for whatever catagory you plan on getting

In Queensland as part of the license application I'm pretty sure it asks you to confirm you have compliant storage at the location you specify in your application.

From what I've seen of difference states license applications they all ask, but it's ok to say no with reason.

You may want to get a license to share/use firearms but never own one yourself.

Even our Government isn't stupid enough to make you get a safe if you don't plan to keep anything in it.

Must ammo be kept in a safe or only in a locked box or cupboard? And do primers and tins of powder also need to be locked away?

Ammo

In VIC - in a sturdy construction lockable receptacle. A bit ambiguous. When I did my safety course the cop said that it can, for example, be a sturdy metal lockable filing cabinet. I used the second separate safe compartment, until I got a shotgun, then I ran out of space and now use solid lockable filing cabinet.

And do primers and tins of powder also need to be locked away?

No idea. This is even more ambiguous and as far as I can tell has no explicit requirements unless you go over 5kg.

I keep mine in a locked ammo can in the garage, way out of sight and reach of my little explorers. But considering something more solid like ute toolbox or something, when they get a bit older.

I think powder needs to be locked in a sturdy wooden box, not steel.

Yep, gun powder stored in a metal container is essentially a bomb. If you store powder in a steel container and it ignites you will have a build up of gas pressure and the system will go boom. A wooden box will come apart before any significant pressure can develop. It's common sense.

It's a plastic ammo can. One of this

I have it padlocked, with latches open and rubber seal removed for that exact reason. There's about a 1cm gap between the box and the lid if it blows... Will look for replacement though, thinking one of those ute boxes is the best approach for my space.

I don't have a link to any legislation thats just what i was told.

I'm 99% sure the material is not legislated in any state, just that it's sufficiently sturdy.

The wood thing is a safety concern acted upon by shooters of their of accord.

This is true but you can simply give them the address of a gun dealer or range which offers storage to the public if you haven't got a safe. If you get a safe at a later date and you want to keep your guns at home you need to fill out a "change of circumstances" form.

In Queensland it's covered under the explosives regulations. It just says to store in the original container in a secure area with that defined as

"secured area means a following place kept locked at all times when the place is not attended by a person—
(a) a drawer or cabinet; or
(b) a cupboard, room or another enclosure"

VIC DG Regs;
73 Requirements for construction of receptacles
A receptacle used for the storage of explosives must be constructed and maintained as follows—
(a) the construction of the receptacle must be sturdy; and
(b) the receptacle must have a close fitting closure; and
(c) the inner construction of the receptacle must—
(i) be made from, or be lined with, plywood or close joined timber or another suitable non-sparking material; and
(ii) not include exposed iron or steel.
