Questions about Victorian gun and ammunition laws. Victorian Firearms Act 1996.

1st PTA arrived, and it's blank????

Post by Modena » 11 Apr 2016, 4:21 pm

I got my 1st PTA in the mail today. When I submitted the form I put a certain type of rifle on the application, now the PTA has arrived the firearm details are blank, is this normal? Does this mean I can use this PTA to acquire anything I want (subject to type of licence obviously) and the LFD will just fill it in accordingly?

confused.

Can't speak for Vic, but in tas, if I have 2 cat B firearms to waiting to be picked up, I can use the PTA for a Cat B basically meaning I can choose either one to take home.
If something doesn't work, apply rule .303!

G'day Modena,
Your PTA should specify Category. If you applied for a Cat A Permit then it will not have any firearm type listed. You can purchase any Cat A firearm with your permit. The gundealer will fill in the firearms details and send the permit to LRD with his monthly returns and they will mail you your Registration, Eventually, Maybe. Cheers.

No, you can NOT purchase anything you want.... they dont really care for the model etc, just the category and chambering....

Do Mexican PTA's specify chambering? cause ours don't.
Those of us north of the border submit PTA's based on Category / Sub-Category which means with a Cat B2 "Centre-Fire Rifle" PTA approved you can go buy a Barrett 50BMG if you want one :)

G'day brett1868,
Our Cat B permits specify action and calibre, which you must nominate on the application. For handguns, we must also supply the serial number. Cheers.

Same down here in Columbia: action and caliber required on application and stated on PTA.

Yeah normal, and the store/registry will fill in full details when you take delivery of the rifle.

Been a while since I got my last PTA but I think mine came with just cat B, bolt action, and brand, calibre and serial were all blank to be completed after.

another question on dates, if I place an order for a rifle what happens if it comes in after the PTA expiry date? Is the PTA expiry the last day you can order, or the last day you can take delivery?

It's the last day. Then you need to get another PTA. For a long time now I have not had to put in a PTA. Normal procedure is go to LGS, say I want that gun you got on the shelf, LGS puts in PTA on my behalf. Sometimes it's ready in a couple hours. sometimes a couple days, but never longer than 1 week.

Xerox, when the firearm is actually acquired the PTA will submit all details ( and fill in the PTA ) and the registry will be subsequently updated with all details.

That's my understanding.

You ask for an extension. A few months after getting my licence, I applied for a .22mag, intending to buy a ruger, when the second 28day period for pta was nearing expiry, and they were still unavailable, i bought 22mag anschutz instead.
I think i called the registry several days before the first expiry, cant recall details, but whatever it was took some time, so I was reluctant to repeat the process indefinitely. I think it was a few more months before the ruger stock showed up. Being the first firearm, a fresh 28day waiting period would have applied if I let the first PTA lapse.
