Arms and Militaria Show/s Buying

Post by AusTac » 21 Mar 2016, 9:51 am

Does anyone know what the deal would be buying a rifle at a small time arms and militaria fair/show, i need a parts donor 303 and am told this would be a prime opportunity to get one.

Should i apply for a cat b permit nowish and hope its all good for that time period next month? Would a seller even have the facillities to write that into their books or whatever needs to be done?

Cheers :)

You would need to get it transferred to your dealer.

G'day AusTac,
Most sellers would be able to process your permit on the day, I have bought from Ballarat, Shepparton and of course Melbourne. I usually don't apply for permits early unless I know or need something specific, but have never had a problem when I do. I must say that from what I have seen over the last few years is that no-one brings their "scrappers" to the shows, you have to ask them what they have at home. There are always parts available at the shows, enough to cover most needs so unless you need an action, you won't need a permit.

Aren't you in Victoria?

Don't they just do it on the computer and it's back same day?

Strange, your registry being closed on week ends. I'm assuming the registry is what approves the purchasing of the gun. Our Instant Background Check is up and running 24/7 as far as I know. Defiantly on week ends, that's probably when most guns are sold in the USA.
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

You going next weekend AusTac 9-10/4?

Apply by email for a PTA.... do it now! Follow up with a call on Monday, let them know nicely, that you're hoping to buy on Sat/Sun (also note that detail in the email to LRD).... you might be lucky and get it in the post by Friday... if not no biggy..

Dealers on the day will sell you a rifle if you have PTA, its a matter of them entering your details into their old-school log book, and you signing, no matter weekend.... they then send their returns to the police every week or so....

You wont get a permit there on the day, but you can still buy without a permit and pick up when the permit arrives... from the dealers premises

As mentioned, you wont find a clunker-parts-donor there most likely.... it will be back at home/the shop in the part bin area....

It doesn't cost you guys in VIC anything to apply for a permit I don't think? Not until you go ahead and submit it.

Why not get a permit ahead of time, and if nothing is to your liking just let it expire.

No need to pay until you pick up your firearm, so if you apply by email/snailmail once you get the permit in the mail, you go to the bank, pay the $9.80 (I think it is) the bank stamps the paper which you present to the dealer.

OR

If you go through the dealer, you walk in, choose your prospective purchase, they put in 'in the system' then you go next door for a coffee or two, walk back to the dealer to walk out with your new firearm... cost of permit is added/incorporated into purchase price.

Yes, its a redundant and pointless process that has no point other than needless additional roadblock/bureaucracy in the ownership of firearms....

Yes, you can apply ahead of time for permit/s and allow them to expire. At no burden to YOURSELF financial or otherwise. There would however be a record of applications against your 'file', what would come of that? who knows.....

Dealer normally adds a few coin if you do the permit through them too I think. Been a while but I think most charge about $25 if doing the permit for you.
