Leaving firearms in vehicles for extended periods (QLD)

Post by CactusElite » 04 Apr 2016, 2:48 pm

I overheard a guy talking to his friend at my LGS on the weekend. He was saying he takes his rifle to work, leaves it locked in his car all day and then goes past the range on the way home to shoot it.

I was always under the impression that this wouldn't exactly be legal. I have no idea under what circumstances he was talking exactly, he may park off street, underground, secure lockup. Whatever the case, I'm not here to tell on anybody. I'm just curious.

The vehicle storage requirements in Qld say "the person is away from the person's secure storage facilities; and it is unreasonable for the person to have to go to those facilities to store the weapon."

So if I had to guess, if this dude had to travel 100 kliks each way for work then that sounds like returning home would be "unreasonable". If he lives and works in the city I doubt that would cut it. I wouldn't like to have my guns stolen in that circumstance.

Ultimately what's reasonable is what the court thinks a normal person would call reasonable. But I'd rather avoid ever ending up in court.

It's pretty easy to steal a vehicle, even load it on a low load truck. Tow away type story.

If firearms are in it then they are gone as well.

No matter what State, I will / not leave my firearms out of sight unless they are in a "Gun Safe".

I have a lock box in my truck. A handgun rides there daily. A rifle gets carried and left in the truck quite often. But that's legal in Oklahoma.
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

I very rarely leave guns in the car. Only when I run into the post office in the nearest town. We can't carry in post offices. Or if I stop for lunch with friends after a range trip I leave the long arms in there, but I park where I can see it. Somebody tries they are going to face a number of really pissed off and heavily armed guys (and sometimes gals).

Except for my more expensive weapons, I wouldn't care that much if I lost a carry piece. There was a time I had an ingrained attitude about "sensitive items" and keeping control of them but I don't really care now.

I have left my rifle in my car whilst at work.

NSW
Car in security car park.
RIfle tethered to the car and locked in a box which was also tethered
Magazine cable
Trigger lock
The bolt and magazine came with me to work.

I figure I can say I took all reasonable precautions.

The instructor at my training course (Asset Training Australia) said it's okay to leave a gun in your car when you're at work as long as you're planning to shoot it afterwards, legally speaking it's no different to leaving a gun in your car because you've stopped to have lunch on your way to the range.

Would not be rating this as quality advice... Considering I don't go for many 8 hour lunches...

It really is case by case reasonableness.

Yanks have something called a trunk gun. It's usually a loaded longarm in case of need, often not something of exceptional quality. Coloradoboy is obviously one of these people. Nothing wrong with that. Like I said, I usually don't leave guns in the car.
